UK women prefer surgery over the gym

New figures have revealed that women are opting to undergo cosmetic surgery to improve their looks instead of hitting the gym.

News website Female First reports that women in Britain’s north west regions are choosing to save up for a quick-fix solution in the New Year in an attempt to avoid spread-out spending throughout 2009.

“People are more inclined to have treatment done now as a way of boosting their own ‘feel good factor’ during the long wet winter months,” said Marie Jenkins, a cosmetic surgery clinic worker in Rotherham.

“The gym seems to be losing ground as the first of many cost cutting exercises.”

Though many cosmetic surgeons have reported a decrease in patients due to the recent economic downturn, many women are reported to be looking for ways to improve their self-image quickly while they can still afford it.

The Rotherham clinic has reported a 28 per cent increase in the number of consultations for non-surgical facial and dentistry treatments.

Procedures like liposuction are still popular as they result in fewer trips to the gym over the winter months. The average price of liposuction in Britain is around £1,500.

A money saving expert suggests that even though a gym membership fee costs much less expensive than liposuction, around 40 per cent of people will stop going to the gym as the year goes on.

This supports the idea that many women would rather pay a lump sum for instant benefits from cosmetic surgery than purchase a gym pass that they won’t use.

Jenkins adds that the clinic is quick to caution patients against a quick-fix.

“We always warn potential patients against jeopardising their health in the rush to look fabulous,” said Jenkins. “Health and beauty should always go hand in hand.”
