Joan Rivers talks straight about cosmetic surgery

Joan Rivers, comedian and straight-talking cosmetic surgery icon, has just announced a four-night live stand-up act in New York, shortly after releasing a pair of new books.

Ms Rivers’ new books straddle two sides of the writing divide: in February 2009, she released the fictional story Murder at the Academy Awards: A Red Carpet Mystery; and in December last year, her non-fiction account hit the shelves, entitled Men Are Stupid… And They Like Big Boobs: A Woman’s Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery.

In a recent interview posted on arts and entertainment website The Improper, Ms Rivers commented: “I think I brought [cosmetic surgery] out of the closet, and made women aware that you can do it and it’s just fine.”

When asked why she decided to write Men Are Stupid… And They Like Big Boobs, she said: “I thought, let me just write a book and tell them everything I can find out about plastic surgery and different procedures. I spoke with 25 doctors, so that was great. And I’m thrilled that I did it. Women shouldn’t have to whisper about it to each other.”

Ms Rivers also said that if she had a son, she would encourage him to go into cosmetic surgery if he decided to train as a doctor due to the field’s growing stature.

The 75-year-old entertainer is well-known for the numerous cosmetic surgery procedures she has undergone in the past, including two facelifts, one rhinoplasty and eye bag removal surgery.

She’s also one of the loudest advocates of Botox wrinkle-relaxing injections in Hollywood and has played a significant role in bringing the benefits of cosmetic surgery to a wider audience.
