Male breast surgery on the rise to eliminate ‘man boobs’

New figures have revealed that cosmetic surgery to treat the condition gynaecomastia, often referred to as ‘man boobs’, is on the rise.

The Scotland on Sunday reports that private treatment to reduce excess fat on male chests has almost doubled in the last year. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has also announced that gynaecomastia treatment saw a 44 per cent rise in the UK in 2008.

The treatment is not currently available on the NHS, although exceptions are made when the patient is shown to be suffering severe psychological distress. However, the Scotland on Sunday reveals that up to 40 per cent of men in Britain are estimated to suffer to some degree from the condition.

Male breast reduction is now the fifth most popular treatment for men in the UK, after rhinoplasty (nose jobs), eyelid surgery, ear corrections and liposuction.

According to Female First, there is a marked increase in men seeking breast reduction surgery in the months approaching summer, with 39 per cent of this year’s procedures having taken place in March.

This echoes figures that found female breast reduction is the fifth most popular operation in the US. What’s more, many women opt for the procedure for non-cosmetic reasons. Breast reduction surgery is carried out to relive pain and discomfort in these instances.

Recent research from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) also found trends suggesting that men could be changing their cosmetic surgery preferences due to the recession, with many men now considering dermabrasion, cheek implants and buttock lifts.
