More people turning to cosmetic surgery to save career

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Men and women in their fifties are opting for cosmetic surgery in a bid to give themselves the best chance of landing a job when competing against candidates who are much younger.

Since the recession, the pool of jobs has shrunk, and the number of people applying for those roles has risen, meaning stiff competition among jobseekers. As a result, it’s suggested that those people in their fifties, who feel like they still have a lot to offer, are aiming to look younger and more fresh-faced in order to land a new job or get that all-important promotion.

When asked why she was considering cosmetic surgery, Susan, who works in fashion marketing, told The Toronto Sun: “I’m in my early 50s and I’m not ready to retire. I’m still able and capable. It just seemed to make sense because I wanted something new and I wanted to feel new and rejuvenated.”

According to a survey carried out by Leger Marketing, 28 per cent of women feel like they make a negative first impression because of how tired their skin looks. The survey also found that on average, women in their fifties want to look 11 years younger.

Canadian cosmetic surgeon Dr Ellis confirmed that it’s not just women who want to look younger, reporting that men “use more Botox because they don’t like the famous number 11 between their eyes”, and that men now make up 50 per cent of patients asking for nose reshaping surgery.

China experiences plastic surgery boom

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

China’s cosmetic surgery industry is now estimated to be worth US$220 million, with around three million people choosing to undergo plastic surgery in 2009.

These latest figures come from the Chinese Association of Plastic and Aesthetics, which puts this meteoric rise in the popularity of cosmetic surgery down to China’s new found consumer spending power.

Until the 1980s, cosmetic surgery was banned by China’s communist government, but since the ban was lifted, Chinese people have opted for procedures including face lifts, breast augmentation, and eyelid surgery.

In an interview with 3News.co.nz, Dr Shi Sanba, a plastic surgeon with her own clinic in Beijing, said: “Now that China is getting richer, people are no longer satisfied with their appearance.”

Dr Sanba’s clinic attracts politicians, celebrities, and China’s elite, and she admits to having undergone over 60 procedures herself, trying out new techniques and treatments before offering them to her clients.

Big Brother star Chanelle regains figure with help of liposuction

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Chanelle Hayes, a contestant on series eight of Big Brother, has regained her size six figure with the help of liposuction and breast enlargement surgery.

The reality television star, who gave birth to her son Blakely in July last year, dropped some of her baby weight by joining a boot camp exercise programme in November and altering her diet, going from a size 12-14, to a size 8-10 in four months.

But Hayes, who is 5ft2in tall, was still not happy with her figure and decided to undergo liposuction surgery to have fat removed from her thighs and arms, taking her to a size six. She also had breast implants, to take her from a 34B to a 34F.

The 23-year-old is no stranger to cosmetic surgery, having undergone fat removal surgery in 2008, and in an interview with The Mail Online, said: “I don’t know, maybe I’ll get fat again and have to have more surgery. I don’t know”.

Piers Morgan ‘not as vain as Cowell’

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Britain’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan has called Simon Cowell vain and says he’s not as vain as him.

In an interview with Parade magazine, Morgan said: “I’m not as vain as him, physically. He has all these treatments and Botox and all. I don’t do that kind of thing”.

He admitted that they have both got “big egos” but insisted that his former boss and fellow judge on the ITV talent show was more concerned with his appearance.

Morgan is known for taking care of himself and for being concerned with the way he looks, and while he admits that this is true, he has denied cosmetic surgery rumours.

When asked whether he’d had Botox in an interview with The Times Magazine last week, Morgan said: “Everyone thinks I have because apparently my forehead is quite unlined. But I’ve never had it. My mother would kill me.”

National Obesity Week: People turn to surgery

Monday, January 17th, 2011

It is officially National Obesity Week (NOW) and the most popular time of year for people in the UK to resolve to lose weight, but many are turning to surgery rather than the gym.

January is the month in which many people make resolutions to lose the extra pounds put on over the festive period, and is always the time when gyms see a rise in people joining, but a growing trend for a quicker fix is emerging.

Worryingly, more and more people who are not overweight, or who only need to lose up to a stone, are looking into cosmetic surgery and into gastric band procedures, rather than exercise and healthy eating.

One such example is mother of two Elaine. In an interview with Express.co.uk, Elaine, 40, who is a size 12 and wants a gastric band, said: “I’m sick of having to fight cravings and be strict with myself. Since I hit my 30s I have to be so disciplined. I’m tired of dieting and exercise to look good, but there’s no way I want to be fat either”.

The revelation comes after the results of a recent survey of 1,500 people, conducted by Ocean Spray, revealed that the average Brit consumes 7,000 calories on Christmas Day alone.

NOW was set up in 2000 by medical practitioners to raise awareness of the growing problem of obesity and the impact it has not only on those people who are overweight, but also on the NHS.

Jersey Shore star tells celebrities to own up to plastic surgery

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Jenni Farley, star of reality television show Jersey Shore, has hit out at celebrities who try to hide their cosmetic surgery procedures.

The 21-year-old graphic designer tweeted: “Funny how stars don’t man up to their plastic surgery…I did…Blaming it on colds etc..Is just hysterical..Words of Deena “Get Real”.”

Farley, known as Jwoww on the hit US show, did not mention any celebrities in particular in her outburst on Twitter, but it followed Kim Kardashian’s recent denials of rumours that she has had lip enhancements.

When asked about her plumper-looking lips by American chat show Extra, Kardashian said: “I have the flu. I’m puffy and swollen, and I have no makeup on.”

Jwoww famously treated herself to breast enlargement surgery as a 21st birthday present. She has her own website on which she talks about her cosmetic surgery and surgeon Dr. Greenberg, in glowing terms, writing: “Dr. Greenberg was recommended to me by a friend and performed my breast augmentation. I am happy to say that I like the overall experience and am more than happy with the procedure results”.

Helen Richey has considered plastic surgery

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Veteran professional dancer Helen Richey has revealed that she has considered having plastic surgery.

In an interview with New Idea magazine, Richey said: “Sometimes I look at myself and wonder, ‘Who is that woman in the mirror?’ and wonder if I should have something done. But then I think I’m doing pretty well for where I am in my life”.

Australian-born Richey found fame as a ballroom and Latin dancer after moving from Australia to the UK to compete in international competitions. At the height of her dancing career, Richey, and her husband and dance partner Robert, regularly finished in the top three at the UK, International, and World Professional Latin Championships.

Richey also told New Idea: “Both my parents were very trim people. I think in that way, I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve never ever been on a diet my whole life. I eat basically what I want, when I want it, but in small amounts. I’m just not a big eater”.

Nowadays, 64-year-old Richey is best known for being a judge on the Australian version of reality TV show Dancing With The Stars.

Cosmetic surgery is not just for the rich and famous

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Specialist eyelid surgeon Dr Ioannis P. Glavas has commented on the recent plastic surgery predictions for 2011, saying that cosmetic surgery is no longer reserved for the rich and famous.

Last month, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) released its annual predictions for surgery trends in 2011, which predicted that non surgical, injectable treatments would continue to rise steadily.

In a statement released to Market Wire, Dr Glavas said: “Botox is one of the better known injectables, of course, but there are many safe, effective choices for people who want to reduce or eliminate puffy, wrinkled skin around the eyes, which often makes us look older.

“Cosmetic surgery is not just reserved for the rich and famous”.

Dr Glavas also talked in positive terms about the changing statistics of Botox patients, and the affordability of cosmetic surgery and non surgical procedures. He confirmed that the average Botox patient is ‘a single mother between the ages of 35 and 55 years old.’

Top 5 most wanted celebrity features

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

We live in beautiful world, one in which celebrities dominate popular culture and the media plays a big part in shaping our view of what beautiful really means. Here we bring you the top five most wanted celebrity features, for men and for women, according to this year’s “Famed Hottest Looks” survey, carried out by Dr. Richard Fleming and Dr. Toby Mayer, cosmetic surgeons operating in Beverly Hills, USA.

In no particular order:

Women chose:
1.  Gisele Bundchen’s body
2.  Natalie Portman’s nose
3.  Scarlett Johansson’s lips (pushing Angelina Jolie off the top spot for the first time in years)
4.  Anne Hathaway’s eyes
5.  Halle Berry’s chin

Men chose:
1.  Mark Wahlberg’s body
2.  Jude Law’s nose
3.  Ashton Kutcher’s lips
4.  Hugh Jackman’s eyes
5.  Jon Hamm’s chin

Observations from Dr. Fleming and Dr. Mayer, published on FoxNews.com, included:
• Dr. Fleming: “Different body types are represented on the list because most women are shaped differently and want to look naturally beautiful.  Some women want the lean look like Gisele, while others want to retain their roundness – just not too round. Men, on the other hand, all want a six-pack regardless of their body type.”
• Dr. Mayer: “The biggest trend we have seen this year is that patients are requesting a more natural look. If you review the names on the list, you will notice that all of those people look naturally beautiful.”

Demi Moore is not against plastic surgery

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Demi Moore has denied rumours that she has had plastic surgery but says that she is not against it.

The 48-year-old actress looked young, fresh-faced and completely wrinkle-free as she waved to fans and photographers at the premiere of No Strings Attached, her husband’s, 32-year-old Ashton Kutcher, new film.

The latest pictures of Moore’s flawless complexion and toned figure have once again sparked rumours that the actress has undergone a number of cosmetic surgery procedures, including liposuction and Botox, to keep herself looking young.

When asked about rumours that she had had £200,000 worth of cosmetic surgery in an interview with Marie Claire, Moore said: “It’s completely false, I’ve never had it done. But I would never judge those who have. If it’s the best thing for them, then I don’t see a problem”.

Perhaps the secret to Moore’s youthful looks is being married to a man 16 years her junior.
