Young man shavingSkin faces a daily assault on it which can take a great deal out of it, with factors such as pollution, sunlight, sweat, stress and infections all capable of taking a heavy toll.

In an article for the Times of India, five of the most common results of these have been addressed, and solutions offered which can ease the signs attributed to each of them.

Acne: High atmospheric humidity, stress and sweating are attributed as main causes of acne, and mean that it can be prevalent in people well beyond their adolescence. But the Times notes that an effective treatment can only be found by medical means, as cosmetic products will not provide a permanent solution. Mad Men star Hendricks’ curves fuel more surgery speculation

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Woman cleavage red dressHer curves have helped make her a star, thanks to her role in TV series Mad Men – but as a new series of the show based in the heady world of the advertising business began this week across America and Canada, the rumours were again flying about whether Christina Hendricks has had cosmetic help to achieve her renowned hourglass figure.

And the actress’s refusal to either confirm or deny the rumours means that they are re-emerging with each new series.

Gossip website Dose.ca is just one which has re-ignited the talk – especially among Mad Men’s male fans – by publishing a picture of her from a Playboy photoshoot in 1999, sporting unremarkable-looking boobs, alongside a more recent one of her, complete with her now-trademark flame red hair, but also a copious helping of cleavage.

“There were also rumours of a nose job, but that’s minor compared to the huge – and you know that’s the right word for it – difference in her breast region,” remarked the Dose team.

Either way, it doesn’t make a jot of difference to the fact that Ms Hendricks was named sexiest woman in the world in 2010 by Esquire magazine, say her fans at Dose, who conclude: “Just admit it if you’ve done it.”

It suggests that susceptibility to acne depends more on family history, age and possibly stress levels than on the amount of sugary food eaten, the BBC reports. (more…)

Study aims to get under the skin of how we age

Monday, April 15th, 2013

beauty treatmentA new American study has set out to bridge the gap in our knowledge of how age actually manifests itself in our faces.

The study is being carried out among a number of cosmetic surgeons themselves, including the doctor co-ordinating it, Val S Lambros, who practises in Newport Beach, California.

Explaining why the study has been established, Dr Lambros said: “Typically, facial aging has been understood by what we do to improve the look of the face.

“For example, when all we were doing was pulling on the face using the facelift, it was thought that the face largely aged by descent. Now that we have the tools to fill the face, we think of the face as deflating as it ages,” she added.

“But what really happens?”

Dr Lambros started looking for an answer to this question in 2005, using a 3-D camera to take pictures of some of her colleagues at annual meetings, and evaluating the changes noted year by year.

“This is the first comprehensive attempt to scientifically document facial aging, and I think it is an extremely interesting and worthwhile effort,” said Dr James Stuzin of Miami, Florida, who officiated at the public unveiling of Dr Lambros’ research on Saturday.
