Breast reduction not rare for men

Cosmetic procedures capable of reducing the amount of fatty tissue around a man’s chest are relatively simple and can have a major impact on a patient’s life.

That’s according to Dr Brian Hass, a cosmetic surgeon in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, who is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He said a number of things can lead to the condition known as gynecomastia. It can be hereditary in some cases, caused by a person gaining or losing weight, or hormonal changes. In some adults, the type of medication they are taking can be to blame.

Woman has breast reduction on ‘embarrassing’ size Js

Channel 4 last night aired a documentary featuring a young British woman with size J breasts, in a bid to illustrate the medical benefits of breast reduction surgery.

Serena, a 21-year-old mother-of-one, told Dr Pixie McKenna (and the nation) that her size J breasts were “embarrassing”, and that they cause lower back pain. She has struggled with the size and weight of her breasts for years and has difficulty finding tops to accommodate them. She admits that wearing low-cut tops can mean her breasts “pop out”.

Men talk openly about chin implants, nose jobs and more

Three men talked openly about cosmetic surgery on US television’s Today programme – illustrating the rapidly changing views of this industry among men in particular.

Describing their experiences of cosmetic surgery, Joseph, 22, Franck, 40, and Bruno, told how the procedures they chose helped to boost their self-esteem, and in some cases alleviate a problem as well as alter their appearance.

Joseph said: “I’ve had a rhinoplasty [nose job], a chin implant, and Restylane fillers in my cheeks.

TV hosts have laser hair removal and brow lift live on air

Hosts of US television’s Today programme this morning underwent non-surgical cosmetic treatments live on air.

Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb both chose to have treatments as part of an episode named ‘Needles, Knives or Nothing’, both happy to trial the procedures in front of a studio audience and the viewers at home.

Kotb chose laser hair removal, while Gifford had a non-surgical eyebrow lift – both were fully kitted out in surgical gowns and caps for the episode, which also saw three men interviewed about their views on cosmetic surgery.

Wrinkle treatments and breast implants will defy economic hardship

The future of the euro is still seen as uncertain by some commentators and the UK economy is officially in recession once more, but the cosmetic surgery sector appears to be beating the downturn.

Austerity measures and tight household budgets are not having an adverse affect on sales of breast implants or injectable cosmetic treatments, according to US pharmaceutical firm Allergan.

New study shows that liposuction and abdominoplasty gives patients better quality of life

According to a new study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), patients that undergo the cosmetic procedures liposuction and/or abdominoplasty (also known as a tummy tuck) benefit from higher levels of self-esteem and a better quality of life.

The study was included in the April issue of ‘Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’. The results found that those undergoing both liposuction and abdominoplasty reported the best benefits, despite the fact that these surgeries take longer to recover from and can be more painful than other procedures.

Jennifer Lopez talks to Glamour about cosmetic surgery and raising twins

Jennifer Lopez says she might think twice about her plan to “grow old gracefully” when she gets older.

In an interview published in the June issue of Glamour magazine, the 42-year-old popstar and mother talked openly about how she coped with raising twins, her views on relationships and cosmetic surgery.

Lopez is just finishing the filming of American Idol, preparing for a tour with Enrique Iglesias and the 18 May sees the release of her new movie. As the cover girl of the June issue, Lopez is a long way from growing old, but cosmetic surgery is still on her mind.

Home of TOWIE launches degree in aesthetic and plastic surgery

Students can now enrol on a plastic surgery degree course, thanks to the latest addition to the curriculum at Anglia Ruskin University.

The practice-based degree, which will be taught at the University’s Chelmsford campus – just 25 minutes by car from the set of reality television show The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) – is open to postgraduate students from September this year. Overseas students with the correct undergraduate qualifications will be able to enrol in the MSc in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Practice from next year (2013).

Australia launches cosmetic surgery seal of approval system

A new system is set to be established in Australia aimed at helping people find suitably qualified cosmetic surgery professionals.

The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery will announce a new cosmetic industry code of practice at a conference due to be held in Cairns tomorrow. The new official seal of approval will be given to clinics that comply with the various standards set down by the organisation.
