NHS Wales spent £3 million on cosmetic surgery

Monday, June 13th, 2011

c0030716tsThe NHS in Wales is reportedly spending more than £3 million each year on administering free cosmetic surgery treatments.

This astonishing figure will no doubt cause anger among patients waiting for essential surgery, particularly in the face of huge spending cuts to crucial NHS services. Surgeons working in Wales defended the figure, which they say reflects the intense pressure they are under from patients who are often willing to fake distress in order to receive cosmetic surgery for free, on the grounds of emotional suffering.

The figures, obtained by Walesonline.co.uk following a Freedom of Information request, reveal that since 2008, 617 patients had ear reshaping surgery, 777 women have had breast surgery, including breast implants and breast reduction, and a little fewer than 200 people had nose reshaping surgery.

Emma Boon, campaign director at the Taxpayer’s Alliance, said: “The NHS is there for the treatment of those people who are ill and need medical attention and help.

“That’s what taxpayers think of when they think of the NHS – they don’t imagine their money is being spent on cosmetic surgery that in some cases simply isn’t justifiable.”

But staff at one Welsh hospital defended the spending, saying that many of their patients suffer from physical abuse and bullying and that in these cases cosmetic surgery is justified.

Reality TV star wants more breast surgery

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Amy Childs is on course to be the next Katie Price, and in a bid to be better, and indeed bigger than her idol, she is looking to have more breast surgery.

The 20-year-old glamour model and star of ITV2’s The Only Way is Essex has admitted to wanting to be like Price, aka Jordan, and plans to have more breast enlargement surgery to achieve the look.

Childs first went under the knife aged 18 in surgery which took her from an A cup to a DD, and now she plans to go up to a GG. She has also had dermal lip fillers to give her a more pronounced pout.

A source close to the star told The Sun: “Amy’s made up her mind to have the operation after she’s finished filming the end of the second series of The Only Way Is Essex, despite concerns from her family and friends.

“She loves Jordan’s look and wants to take it up another notch herself”, the friend said.

Experts urge patients to expect more from breast reconstruction

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Women who choose to have breast reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy should not be left dissatisfied with the results, according to one plastic surgeon.

Mr Dalvi Humzah, a member of the British Association of Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, said: “With breast cancer being diagnosed in one in eight women in the UK, it has never been so important for women to feel confident in the results of reconstructive surgery following breast cancer.

“Women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer should not feel uncomfortable in approaching specialist cosmetic surgeons for further reconstructive treatment following their original reconstructive surgery.”

The latest statistics from Breast Cancer Care reveal that the number of women being diagnosed with the illness in the UK has risen from 46,000 to 47,000, meaning that it is more important than ever for those women who want it, to receive specialist reconstructive breast surgery.

Mother wins fight to have breast reduction surgery

Monday, February 7th, 2011

An Australian mum who has been fighting to have breast reduction surgery paid for by the country’s public health system, has finally been placed on a hospital waiting list.

Amy Mudge, from Tweed Heads South in New South Wales, told her local newspaper that her G-cup breasts are causing her pain and leading to breathing difficulties.

She has been petitioning to have the operation paid for by the state, as it would cost her $10,000 to have the procedure carried out privately.

Speaking to the Tweed Daily News, Ms Mudge said: “The operation is the only way this can be fixed. It is the only way I will be able to breathe again.”

After starting a Facebook group to highlight her plight and having her campaign taken up by the local newspaper, Ms Tweed has now been placed on a hospital waiting list and is due to have the breast surgery carried out within months.

A spokeswoman for the Northern New South Wales Local Health Network said that “each case is considered according to the clinical need”.

90 per cent of Brits now consider cosmetic surgery

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

More Brits have expressed their desire for cosmetic surgery enhancements than ever before, with 90 per cent saying they had thought about improving some part of their body through surgery.

A survey of 2,500 women reported by the Metro revealed that the summer weather is causing more women across Britain to look towards plastic surgery as a way to achieve their ideal bikini body. The most common area women said they wanted to improve was their stomachs, with 68 per cent expressing desire for a tummy tuck.

In second place was liposuction – previously claimed to be the world’s most popular procedure – with 29 per cent saying they wanted the treatment to get rid of excess fat.

After the tummy, the areas of the body women said they were least happy with were their legs, bottoms and busts, with four per cent saying they would choose some form of breast surgery and six per cent desiring cosmetic surgery on their buttocks. The most frequently cited celebrity inspirations for women’s bodies were cosmetic surgery fans Kelly Brook and Katie Price.

Non surgical treatments such as Botox and laser hair removal were found to be popular too, though were considered less vital to achieving a beach body. Only 10 per cent of the women questioned said they would not consider any form of enhancement, suggesting cosmetic surgery is becoming ever more popular.
