More men and women are having cosmetic surgery

The number of people who chose to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure increased again last year, according to new data.

Statistics gathered by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) revealed a 6 per cent year-on-year rise in the number of procedures carried out in 2011. According to the industry organisation, a total of 43,069 cosmetic operations were performed in the UK last year, up from 38,274 during the previous 12 months.

More men getting cosmetic surgery than ever before

New figures show that an increasing number of men are turning to cosmetic surgery in order to improve their looks.

Data compiled by The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons found there has been a 7 per cent rise in the number of men opting to have procedures carried out. A report by the Daily Mirror said rhinoplasty has become increasingly popular, as have male chest reduction operations.

Men more worried than women about appearance

Men are more concerned than women about their physical appearance, according to the results of a new study.

Research commissioned by Central YMCA and The Succeed Foundation, found that four out of five men are unhappy with their body, compared to 75 per cent of women. “Beer bellies”, going bald, a lack of muscles and “man boobs”, were all put forward as concerns.

Face lifts for men continue to rise

Plastic surgery clinics in Queensland, Australia, have seen a continued rise in the number of men opting for face lift surgery.

A spokesman for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr Mark Magnusson, said: “There have always been men getting [face lift surgery] done.”

He added that while the demand had risen in recent months, men had already been a notable presence in cosmetic surgery clinics, often opting for Botox and other non-surgical procedures as well as cosmetic surgery such as face lifts and blepharoplasty.

‘Silver surgery’ is latest trend to boom

Reports suggest there is growing demand for cosmetic surgery treatments from people over the age of 60.

Known affectionately as ‘silver surgery’, the number of pensioners opting to have surgical and non-surgical procedures carried out is said to be booming. Figures reported by the Daily Express newspaper today claim there has been a 303 per cent increase in the number of women in their 60s and 70s having cosmetic procedures over the last five years.

Experts advise gynaecomastia patients to try diet first

Men suffering from enlargement of the breast tissue have been told by experts to look to their diet before considering surgery.

Male breast enlargement is said to affect millions of teenagers and adults, and is often related to excess oestrogen being produced during puberty. According to Dr Elliot Jacobs, who is an expert in gynecomastia surgery, about 60 per cent of teenage boys develop some degree of breast enlargement, but in most cases it disappears after a couple of years.

Dr Miguel Delgado Jr, who is based in the Bay Area of San Francisco, said he decided to establish www.sanfranciscobreastreduction.com after coming to the conclusion that there was a lack of information available to people considering having cosmetic surgery.

An increasing number of people are opting to go abroad to have operations carried out, a trend that has been labelled medical tourism. But professionals are warning that trusting a doctor who may not be properly certified could lead to complications during and after the operation.
