Leading dermatologist urges consumers to choose skincare backed by science

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011
A leading dermatologist has spoken out in support of skincare that uses ingredients scientifically proven to be effective.
Dr Joe Fowler, former president of the American Contact Dermatitis Society, told women’s healthcare magazine Viva that people should avoid marketing hype and stick to facts.
In an interview with Viva following the Dermatological Society’s annual conference in Wellington, New Zealand, Dr Fowler said: “Almost nothing works at a level below the skin that you can rub in.

Talking about natural skincare products, Dr Fowler added: “It’s good we’ve got some proven natural ingredients, but the flip side of that is there are a lot of natural ingredients that are promoted as having various benefits and there’s no data or science to support that.
