Actress Rose McGowan may have had more surgery, says expert

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Italian-born American actress Rose McGowan is feeding the Hollywood rumour mill, since appearing in Wednesday’s episode of Law and Order: SVU looking remarkably different to normal.

The 37-year-old admitted to having reconstructive plastic surgery after the skin underneath her eye was badly cut during a car accident in 2007, but some plastic surgeons suspect that the actress has had further work done since.

Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr Jennifer Walden told PopEater: “It’s a possibility that she had eyelid surgery and is blaming her lower lid drooping on having cut her eye”, she said.

“I think she’s had soft tissue fillers injected into her face, into her lips, her cheeks, and that has led to a more unnatural look”, she added.

Dr Walden went on to say that it looked as though McGowan had also had a nose job, and to warn people that having too many dermal fillers too young can actually cause premature ageing.

Laser hair removal and Botox grow in popularity

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

New figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that the number of people having laser hair removal treatment and Botox injections has risen sharply.

Of the 13.1 million procedures performed in 2010, 11.6 million were non-surgical and 91 per cent of them were carried out on female patients. The number of Botox injections administered in 2010 was up 584 per cent on the same figures from 2000, a reflection of the incredible advances made in the last decade. Laser hair removal treatments were also up by 27 per cent on figures from ten years ago.

Other procedures that became more popular last year were breast implants, up two per cent, breast uplifts, up nine per cent, and breast reduction, up 6 per cent. Dermal fillers also gained popularity.

The popularity of a number of procedures fell when compared with the last decade, including liposuction, face lift surgery, nose jobs and eyelid surgery.

Korean plastic surgery figures reveal rise in teen ops

Friday, February 18th, 2011

A survey carried out in Korea has found that 41.4 per cent of teenagers polled would be willing to have plastic surgery for beauty reasons.

Research carried out by e-Seoul found that the average age of people choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery procedures has fallen in recent years. And a worrying statistic thrown up by the report is the fact that the number of under-18s opting to have operations is increasing. Double eyelid surgery is one of the most popular procedures with young people, according to a report by the Korea Joongang Daily newspaper.

Lee Seung-Hwan, a surgeon who runs a clinic in southern Seoul, has seen the change.

He said: “Compared to 2007, the percentage of teenage clients has gradually increased in 2010. What to take note of here is the fact that the minimum age group is decreasing to middle school students in grade eight or nine.”

Korea is by no means the only country where youngsters are having surgical procedures performed. A report in the South China Morning Post on Monday said in Hong Kong, girls as young as 14 were having operations with their parents’ consent.

Cosmetic surgery used to boost job prospects in Hong Kong

Monday, February 14th, 2011

University graduates in Hong Kong are spending thousands of US dollars on cosmetic surgery procedures, in a bid to be first in line for the best jobs.

The South China Morning Post reported that the number of people looking to have cosmetic surgery had risen by more than 20 per cent in the last few years, and that many procedures are being funded by the parents of young jobseekers.

One surgical specialist reportedly said that patients as young as 14 were undergoing surgical procedures and that these were being paid for by parents.

Dr Daniel Lee Tin-Chak, a plastic surgeon based in Hong Kong, said: “Some young people go for the treatment before looking for jobs. They will grab the school holidays to do it, or have one right after graduation before going for job interviews.”

A 23-year-old graduate who was interviewed by the newspaper revealed that she had spent $5,133 on eyelid surgery to enlarge her eyes before she started her hunt for a job.

Competition for jobs in Hong Kong is fierce amongst those who have a degree as the number of people achieving high academic qualifications continues to rise.

US cosmetic procedures up five per cent

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

The number of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures carried out in the United States in 2010 increased by 5 per cent, year-on-year.

Statistics compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that 13.1 million people invested in some form of cosmetic surgery.

Breast augmentation was the most popular surgical procedure last year, with 296,000 operations carried out – an increase of 2 per cent on 2009. Nose reshaping and eyelid surgery were the second and third most popular procedures respectively.

According to the ASPS, a significant number of the surgical body contouring procedures carried out last year followed substantial weight loss by patients.

Dr Phillip Haeck, ASPS president, believes the rise in the number of procedures performed is linked to the improving US economy. He also highlighted the fact that more people are now investing in surgery to help them stay looking younger, in order to remain competitive in their working environment.

He said: “There’s some pent-up demand for cosmetic surgery procedures. People have waited a couple of years or more to have procedures, until their finances were at least somewhat back in order. But all indications are that more consumers are again willing to spend more to look better.”

China experiences plastic surgery boom

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

China’s cosmetic surgery industry is now estimated to be worth US$220 million, with around three million people choosing to undergo plastic surgery in 2009.

These latest figures come from the Chinese Association of Plastic and Aesthetics, which puts this meteoric rise in the popularity of cosmetic surgery down to China’s new found consumer spending power.

Until the 1980s, cosmetic surgery was banned by China’s communist government, but since the ban was lifted, Chinese people have opted for procedures including face lifts, breast augmentation, and eyelid surgery.

In an interview with 3News.co.nz, Dr Shi Sanba, a plastic surgeon with her own clinic in Beijing, said: “Now that China is getting richer, people are no longer satisfied with their appearance.”

Dr Sanba’s clinic attracts politicians, celebrities, and China’s elite, and she admits to having undergone over 60 procedures herself, trying out new techniques and treatments before offering them to her clients.
