Men more worried than women about appearance

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Men are more concerned than women about their physical appearance, according to the results of a new study.

Research commissioned by Central YMCA and The Succeed Foundation, found that four out of five men are unhappy with their body, compared to 75 per cent of women. “Beer bellies”, going bald, a lack of muscles and “man boobs”, were all put forward as concerns.

Experts advise gynaecomastia patients to try diet first

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Men suffering from enlargement of the breast tissue have been told by experts to look to their diet before considering surgery.

Male breast enlargement is said to affect millions of teenagers and adults, and is often related to excess oestrogen being produced during puberty. According to Dr Elliot Jacobs, who is an expert in gynecomastia surgery, about 60 per cent of teenage boys develop some degree of breast enlargement, but in most cases it disappears after a couple of years.

More Lebanese men opting for cosmetic procedures
The number of men in Lebanon undergoing plastic surgery and non-surgical treatments has increased in recent years.
Plastic surgeon Roger el-Khoury, who founded Beirut Beauty Clinic in Zalka, has revealed that since 2006, his proportion of male patients has jumped from 5 per cent to 20 per cent.
He said: “Plastic surgery is now linked to wellness. Men also want to feel good, so they ask about cosmetic surgery.”
The most common treatments for men include facelifts, hair transplants and Botox; though they also opt for liposuction, body sculpting and nose jobs.
Bahaa Arbid of St George Hospital, another cosmetic practitioner in Beirut, added: “Lots of men are encouraged by their girlfriends, who make them feel more comfortable about having surgery.”

Cosmetic surgery popularity rises in UAE

Cosmetic surgery popularity rises in UAE
The United Arab Emirates has seen a huge increase in the popularity of plastic surgery procedures sought by its citizens – a change that many people attribute to a rise in obesity levels.
Procedures such as liposuction and male breast reduction are particularly in demand as people aim to fight the flab.
Experts blame factors such as diets containing high levels of saturated fat and carbohydrates; and, perhaps less expectedly, sleeping less than seven hours a night.
“Liposuction tops the list of the popular cosmetic procedures compared to female breast operations and nose operations, which are among the most sought after add hyphen surgeries,” said Dr B Venkata Ratnam, a plastic surgeon at New Medical Centre Specialty Hospital in Abu Dhabi, quoted in The Gulf Today.
Dr Ratnum specialises in gynaecomastia, the enlargement of male breasts, which he said affects 10 per cent of the male population of Abu Dhabi.
“[As a result of gynaecomastia], their psychological development is marred,” he said. “No exercise or medicine can cure enlarged breasts. They need to be removed by a surgical operation.”

More men aware of procedures to rid themselves of man boobs, figures suggest

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Male chest reduction surgery procedures rose by 28 per cent in 2010 compared with 2009, according to the latest figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

These positive figures are made even more impressive by the fact that they were recorded during tough economic times, and this alone suggests that awareness of the procedure has grown considerably. Fat removal surgery, a form of liposuction, is used to treat gynaecomastia – the medical term for the condition of excessive breast tissue in men – and is a quick and apparently increasingly common procedure in the UK.

In an interview with the Metro, personal trainer Adam Stowell advocated a healthy diet and a good multivitamin to combat the development of man boobs in the first place.

“Take a good quality multivitamin, as this will decrease pressure on your liver, leaving it free to detox any bad oestrogens entering the body. Drinking green tea also metabolises bad oestrogens”, he said.

Plastic surgeons see huge rise in male chest reductions

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

One UK hospital has seen a huge rise of 210 per cent in the number of patients enquiring about male chest reduction surgery.

Reconstructive surgeon and consultant Alan Park told the Coventry Telegraph: “The number of men we see has been gradually increasing for some time.

“I think it is because there has been a lot on television about male appearance, so men are not so embarrassed by it anymore. They feel like they can talk about it with their friends and come to us.”

Men suffering from what are commonly known as ‘man boobs’ often choose to undergo the specialist fat removal surgery in order to achieve a flatter chest. This is because these deposits of fatty tissue are difficult, and in some cases impossible, to shift simply through a better diet and increased exercise regimes.

Rise in male chest reduction during January

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

The number of men opting for male chest reduction surgery rose sharply during January, according to experts.

A report published by the Echo newspaper today suggests that more men than ever are enquiring about cosmetic surgery procedures to change the way they look and increase self-confidence. Treatments for gynaecomastia or ‘man boobs’ are said to be topping the list.

When interviewed, consultant plastic surgeon Dr Venkat Ramakrishnan said: “We feel it is important to remind people that having cosmetic surgery is a very serious, life-changing decision and one which should not be rushed or taken lightly.

“Women and men should not let their eagerness for change overpower their ability to make a responsible choice about their surgeon and hospital.”

A spokesperson for NHS South East Essex echoed Dr Ramakrishnan’s concerns, pointing out that gynaecomastia can be caused by liver abnormality, or breast or testicular cancer, and that these conditions should always be ruled out by a GP before cosmetic surgery is performed.

More men are turning to liposuction

Monday, October 18th, 2010

A growing number of men are turning to cosmetic surgery, particularly in Florida’s Tampa Bay, in a trend that has seen men become keener to emulate Hollywood’s leading men who are said to use liposuction in order to fend off middle-aged spread, TBO.com reports.

Speaking exclusively to TBO.com, one of Tampa Bay’s most prominent surgeons explained that male plastic surgery was no longer considered ‘taboo’ by the average man, who felt inspired to enhance their own appearance by indulging in minimally invasive cosmetic treatments said to be popular with Hollywood’s ageing actors.
