British women still confused over PIP advice

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Some women with French-made PIP breast implants remain confused following new advice from the British government, according to a report in the New York Times.

The UK’s health secretary Andrew Lansley said on Friday that following a review, no evidence had been gathered to support the routine removal of PIP implants which were given to an estimated 40,000 women in Britain.

Announcing the findings of the review panel, headed by NHS medical director Professor Bruce Keogh, Mr Lansley also said no evidence had been found to link the implants with a cancer risk due to the materials used.

Former model Cindy Crawford was spotted at a recent Los Angeles Lakers basketball game looking visibly fuller faced.

According to Zeenews.com, a board certified dermatologist believes it is due to Crawford having had dermal fillers in the face.

“Her cheeks are a lot fuller. She definitely had something injected in her cheeks,” dermatologist Ben Behnam said.

He continued: “They’re designed to give people higher cheekbones. It’s very popular in the industry and her cheeks are visibly higher and fuller.”

Therapeutic Goods Administration says no evidence to link PIP with health risk

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia has responded to speculation on health concerns surrounding Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) breast implants, saying there is no evidence to suggest increased risks to health.

A panel of experts from the TGA met yesterday to discuss the implications for women who have had such implants and agreed that there was no evidence to support a greater rupture rate in PIP implants compared to other breast implants. In addition they found that there was no adverse effect caused by the chemicals used to make them.

TGA national manager Rohan Hammett said: “There is no evidence of cancer-forming chemicals in the implants and there have been no reports to the TGA of the rare cancer, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, associated with PIP implants in Australia.”

“The best available expert clinical advice is that there is no current evidence in Australia to support removal of PIP implants in women in whom the implant has not ruptured.”

Further reports on PIP are expected to be published in the coming days.

Christmas season most popular time of year for cosmetic surgery

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Cosmetic surgeons and skin care experts have revealed that the Christmas period is their busiest time of year.

Dr Franklin Rose, a plastic surgeon operating in Houston, Texas, said he saw a rise in the number of patients wanting face lifts. During December he performed approximately 20 face lifts a week, twice the number of patients he usually sees each week.

While the festive holiday period might seem like an unusual time to have cosmetic surgery, those in the industry attribute the rise in patients during December to the downtime from work. Surgeons and dermatologists believe that the holiday period gives patients time to recover and scars or redness time to fade.

Botox can be used to reduce the pain associated with migraines, but one woman has gone a step further and had her frown muscle removed.

Pamela Mason, 47, who has suffered with migraines since the age of 14, was diagnosed as a regular sufferer and was advised to have her corrugator facial muscle removed. This is the muscle that allows a person to frown and is the muscle often targeted with Botox to relieve the pain of migraines.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Mrs Mason said: “It is wonderful. I have my life back again.

“I suffered for so long and I always thought that was just how life was going to be. I would spend days on end in bed, unable to move or do anything,” she added.

Liposuction is most popular procedure for 2011

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Liposuction has been voted as the surgical procedure of the year in the 2011 Readers’ Choice Awards from online magazine American Health and Beauty.

In spite of the huge rise in popularity of non-surgical procedures such as Botox and laser hair removal, surgical procedures are still able to produce the most dramatic results and liposuction seems to have had the most transformative results.

Rising obesity levels in the US have been cited as one of the reasons why liposuction has gained so much popularity in recent years, even though the procedure is not designed to be used as a weight loss tool. Instead, liposuction surgery is used to remove stubborn pockets of fat in order to sculpt the body into the desired and well-proportioned shape.
