Dionne Bowen, 25, a care worker from Brighton, had always felt the odd one out in her well-endowed family, until her mum stepped in
"All the women in my family are well-endowed, so my chest - or lack of it - was a real issue for me when I was growing up. I used to be a 34A, while my sisters Vanessa, 29, and Jodie, 23, are 34C and 38E and my mum's an E-cup. When I was a teenager, I'd look at Vanessa when she was dressed up and think, ‘I'd like to look like that.' I wanted to be sexually confident like my sisters; instead, I'd hide my chest from boyfriends and even keep my top or bra on during sex. I hated summer - clingy tops just highlighted my size.
"Then last year I went to see a friend, Stacey, 23, a bank clerk, the day after she'd had a boob job. She'd gone from being my size to a 34C overnight. Even though she was bruised and wearing a sports bra, her boobs looked amazing - I was sold.
"A month later I went to the same clinic, The Harley Medical Group, for a consultation. They sized me up and told me to go for a D-cup - I'm quite broad-shouldered and they said it would suit my frame better. I was worried my breasts would be too big, so the nurse gave me a fake bra with implants to try. I instantly felt more confident.
"The only problem was, I couldn't afford to have the operation; it was £3,850. I went to see my mum later that day and asked if she'd help me out. She tried to talk me out of the surgery, but knew I'd always hated not having boobs. In the end she was really supportive and stumped up the whole amount on her credit card. My boyfriend was behind whatever I decided to do, too.
"Six weeks later I went for surgery. I was in real pain for the first week or so afterwards. My chest felt like it was burning; I suffered sharp pains and was terrified that if I moved, my stitches would split open. I was desperate to have a bath but because the stitches were dissolvable, I couldn't wash properly for six weeks - my hair was filthy. On top of that, I had to wear this vile granny sports bra all the time and sleeping was agony. My boyfriend was mesmerised by my breasts but he didn't touch them.
"It was worth the pain, though. A few months after the operation, I took one of the women I look after on holiday to Dorset. She saw my boobs when we were by the pool and said, ‘Wow! I've never noticed them before. You should be a model!' it felt great.
"Having breasts has really given me more va-va voom, especially in bed - at last I can leave the lights on. And my mum and sisters love them; next time there's a family photo, I won't be hiding at the back."
NIP/TUCK TRUTHS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Cosmo reveals the secrets some cosmetic surgeons forget to mention...
Don't fall for the sell
Avoid surgeons who act like salesmen. "Professional expertise might lead surgeons to recommend different surgery," says Louise Braham, director of The Harley Medical Group. "For example, you might get better results from a breast lift and boob job, than boob job alone. But surgeons should only discuss the areas you're enquiring about. If you go in for a boob job but find yourself being sold a tummy tuck, be wary. And remember that, legally, there's a 14-day cooling-off period, so if you sign up then change your mind, you get your deposit back."
