Discover your Body Confidence

Mr Sankar, Chief Medical Officer at The Harley Medical Group shares some of the popular procedures and treatments that are known to boost body confidence & self-esteem.

The Women and Equalities Committee shared results from a Body Image Survey in Parliament and they found that over 6 in every 10 women feel negatively about their bodies. Additionally, their findings showed that 2020 has accelerated negative trends pertaining to self-esteem and body confidence in the UK, with 53% of adults responding that the lockdown made them feel worse or much worse about their appearance.

Body image and self-esteem are sensitive issues, however aesthetic treatments and procedures can help improve overall body confidence and wellbeing. Body contouring and breast enhancements and reduction are helping patients improve self-confidence, especially as lockdown continues to trigger those feelings of low self-esteem and self-consciousness.

It’s very important to find ways to love our bodies and investing in ourselves via cosmetic procedures can help to support body confidence. Mr Sankar shares some of the most popular treatments from The Harley Medical Group that can give people a welcomed boost of confidence.

Body Contouring

Lockdown has accelerated weight gain in nearly 48% of Britons due to increased comfort eating, drinking more alcohol and increased anxiety and stress levels. While simple diet and exercise changes can help many get back on track with weight maintenance and improving overall wellbeing, cosmetics procedures can help amplify the appearance of those results while restoring some self-confidence.

Mr Sankar says that patients can consider treatments such as liposuction and tummy tucks to help achieve their desired outcome.

Procedures such as breast reduction, tummy tucks, thigh and arm lifts/liposuction can provide long-term results in alleviating areas of stubborn and unwanted fat. Liposuction treatments have boomed during lockdown, as people have had the extra time to recover at home, as well as the opportunity to be more discreet.

“A lot of our clients desire improved body confidence, which can be achieved through a tummy tuck procedure along with appropriate liposuction,” says Mr Sankar. “Female clients also often enquire about thigh reductions, as well as targeting the upper arm area as this is another key part of the body for storing unwanted fat.”

Breast Cosmetic Surgery

According to a medical study from Anglia Ruskin University, 75% of British women are unhappy with their breast size, affecting their body confidence and self-esteem. It is no surprise that breast surgery remains one of the highest performed cosmetic procedures in the UK.

One of the reasons why women are dissatisfied with their breast size is due to wanting something that fits their body profile more suitably, or to have something that is more proportionate to their body to ease self-consciousness. “While many opt for breast augmentation due to reduced development or loss of breast tissue from weight loss or pregnancy, many are also looking to correct asymmetric concerns,” Mr Sankar says.

There is also an increase in demand for women requesting breast reduction and uplift to address concerns of body proportion that triggers feelings of self-consciousness. “Those with larger breasts find that a breast reduction can help boost their self-confidence to help improve overall body proportion while alleviating back and neck pain as well as deep shoulder strap marks.”

Cosmetic Gynaecology

Cosmetic Gynaecology is one of our fastest growing surgical procedures, with women increasingly realising that they don’t have to simply accept something that is making them unhappy or making them feel unconfident.

The most common cosmetic gynaecology surgery we carry out is labia reduction, which is a surgical procedure that reshapes and reduces the labia minora/majora, the inner and outer of the ‘lips’ that surround the opening of the vagina to help regain body confidence.

Changes to the vagina can occur throughout a woman’s life, for example as a result of childbirth, ageing, menopause, hormone deficiency related to cancer therapy or weight loss.
