Seasonal Skin Care: Winter

The most important lesson to ever learn about Skin Care is that it is very much seasonal. That means that with the change of each season, you’ll likely notice a difference in the condition of your skin.

Winter can be especially harsh, with plummeting temperatures, freezing winds and overly stuffy homes and offices that wreak havoc on our, usually, unproblematic skin. So if the winter can cause so much damage to skin which is usually blemish free, imagine what it could do if your skin is dry, sensitive and Acne prone.

We conducted a survey of 4,000 adults to discover your Skin Care habits – including your go-to products and treatments as well as your bad habits and skin confessions. We’ve taken what you told us and put it together in the form of this helpful winter Skin Care guide, so now you can find out the secret to great looking skin day in, day out. Here are our top Skin Care tips to get your skin looking healthy again this winter.

What type of skin is affected by wintry weather?

Winter weather can affect all skin types but can be especially harsh on those with sensitive complexions.

My skin feels drier than usual – why is this?

Skin can become dry in winter, due to a combination of cold temperatures, blustery winds, and our central-heated homes and offices. All of these factors mean that there is less moisture present in the air, causing skin to feel dry and tight. Those with sensitive skin may also notice itching and flakiness making it important to keep skin hydrated. We recommend using bath oil and applying plenty of moisturiser on your face and body to stop skin from drying out.

My usual Skin Care routine isn’t having the same effect – what should I do?

The change in season is a great time to reassess your Skin Care regime. Bear in mind that winter weather is very drying so you may prefer to switch up your usual products to account for this. Opt for cleansing creams or oil rather than your usual cleansing gel. If you use toner, switch to a mild and gentler formula to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils. Take a look at our expert Skin Care range to find the right product for your skin type.

How often should I apply moisturiser during winter?

If you suffer from dry and sensitive skin, there is no limit to the amount of times you can moisturise each day. The more moisture you can get into your skin, the less likely it is to become sore, irritated and itchy.

I apply moisturiser frequently but it doesn’t have the desired effect – how can I make it work?

Before your moisturiser can penetrate your skin and work its magic, it needs to be able to penetrate the upper layers of your skin. Winter can cause a build-up of dead skin cells which will block your pores and prevent any moisturiser from doing its job. Be sure to exfoliate regularly to prevent dull looking skin. Those with dry skin should be exfoliating three times a week, while oily and combination types require twice weekly exfoliation. Remember to apply plenty of moisturiser afterwards to keep skin hydrated and radiant-looking.

Should I change my day cream in the winter?

Check the ingredients on your day cream. For it to be effective during the winter, make sure it contains antioxidants and SPF – that’s right, you’ll need to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays during the winter as well as the summer. You should apply sunscreen all year round for maximum protection.

My Skin Care lists lots of ingredients – what are the benefits of each?

It’s common for Skin Care products to offer a range of benefits to the user. You’ll likely notice the following ingredients in your products: vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, Beta Glucan. These ingredients promote new cell turnover, work as an anti-oxidant and skin brightener, help to heal skin, and reduce typical signs of Ageing.

My Acne has flared up – is this common during winter?

When skin lacks moisture, it produces more oil than usual to help naturally hydrate your skin. If too much oil is produced this can lead to an Acne flare up. It’s very common for Acne to be worse during the winter as the lack of moisture causes this excess oil and the bacteria on your skin to clog your pores, causing Acne to form.

We offer effective Acne treatment here at The Harley Medical Group, whether you’re looking to banish your unwanted blemishes or get rid of those scars for good. A course of Aesthera PPx/ Isolaz Laser treatment is ideal for visibly improving the four different types of Acne spots. You’ll notice a difference between 24 and 48 hours after treatment. Unlike other lasers, Isolaz is gentle on skin and virtually painless – many of our patients describe the sensation as similar to that of a warm massage.

Acne featured in the top ten list of respondents’ worries where appearance is concerned (10.53 per cent) – but thanks to our Acne solution, there’s no need to suffer from it any longer.

My Rosacea always gets worse in the winter – is it purely the change in temperature?

Surprisingly, the drop in temperatures in winter is not the main cause of Rosacea symptoms worsening. In actual fact, it’s largely down to the food we eat. Rosacea is often triggered by diet and the food and drink we tend to consume when it’s cold outside (spicy food and hot drinks) are known triggers of the skin condition. Rosacea can be treated effectively with our Acne solution, reducing the red tone in your skin and allowing you to get back to enjoying yourself.

Are there any natural ways to boost my skin during winter?

From our survey, we found that many of you are lacking a nutritious diet. Not eating your greens will have a negative impact on your skin’s appearance. Greasy, fried and fatty foods (not to mention those sugary snacks you keep in your desk drawer for emergencies) all contribute to dull, spotty skin. During the winter, it’s more important than ever to ensure your diet is rich in skin-boosting essential vitamins and minerals. Opt for dark green leafy vegetables with every meal and snack on unsalted nuts to see a huge difference in your skin.
