Ear Reshaping

About Ear Reshaping Surgery

The shape, size or positioning of the ears can make a huge difference to whether a person has confidence in their appearance or not, and for many years people have been choosing to have ear reshaping surgery to increase their self-confidence. Ear reshaping surgery is also known as otoplasty and is a surgical procedure that is carried out to reduce the size of the ears, reshape the ears, or reset protruding ears so that they sit closer to the head. This very straightforward procedure can be carried out on both adults and children who feel their lives are being negatively affected by the appearance of their ears.

  • Increased self-confidence and self esteem
  • Wider choice of hairstyles
  • Stop unfriendly comments
  • More choice in sports and careers

Ear reshaping (otoplasty) surgery usually takes between two and three hours to complete while the patient is under a general anaesthetic. It is a straightforward procedure which involves the experienced surgeon making small and discreet surgical incisions behind the ears and within the ears to ensure that there is no visible scarring as a result of the procedure. Otoplasty is most commonly performed on those people whose ears are prominent and who therefore want them setting closer to the head, reducing in size, or both. However, it can be used as a way of simply altering the shape or size too and this is done by removing the skin, reshaping the cartilage underneath and stitching the ears before bandaging the area.

There are many reasons why people choose to have ear reshaping surgery:

  • Lack of self confidence due to protruding ears
  • Unable to wear particular hairstyles or have a short hair cut as it would emphasize the problem
  • Unwelcome comments from friends or work colleagues
  • Inability to follow career of choice that involves wearing a hat / cap as it may draw attention to the ears

The final decision will be made between you and your Cosmetic Surgeon. The procedure is most suitable for those patients who are self-conscious about the size, shape or positioning of their ears.

Ear reshaping surgery - the procedure

Before your ear reshaping surgery we would recommend that you wash your hair the evening before surgery. The bandage will be on for 7-10 days continuously and during this time you will not be able to wash your hair.

If you are a smoker, or take aspirin or any other medication, your Cosmetic Surgeon will wish to discuss this with you at your consultation. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will advise you when you are to discontinue and/or resume these activities.

The Cosmetic Surgeon will visit you in your room prior to surgery and may mark the ears with a pen in preparation for your ear reshaping surgery. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will also obtain your final consent, and answer any last minute questions you may have.

Going home after ear reshaping surgery

  • There may be some residual bruising after your ear reshaping surgery, but the scars will now be well hidden behind the ears.
  • You should avoid sleeping on your sides in order to reduce ear pressure.
  • Once the bandages and any sutures are removed, we recommend regular hair washes/showers to clean behind the ear - avoiding rubbing, as the ear will remain tender for a while.
  • For further 7-10 nights we recommend you wear a sports headband to protect the ears whilst in bed.
  • It is very important that you attend the follow up post surgery appointment which has been made for you, to care for your wound and see your Cosmetic Surgeon post-operatively to make sure that you are healing well.
  • You will have your own personal Nurse Counsellor both before and after your procedure to support you and answer any questions you may have.

Recovery from ear reshaping Surgery

The surgery itself is simple and the recovery period is therefore usually fairly short. Patients are required to wear a bandage around the head for one week after the procedure to ensure that the ears and stitches are protected from knocks and the risk of infection. After a week the stitches will be removed and you will be able to see the results immediately

  • How long do the results last?
  • When can I return to work?

  • How long does the treatment take?
  • Is the treatment painful and if so what form of anaesthesia is used?
  • What type of care will I need after treatment?
  • Will I need pain relief following treatment?
