What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation can commonly be referred to as a boob job, breast enlargement, breast implants and breast surgery.

At The Harley Medical Group, we recognize that small or changed breasts can cause anxiety in women. Breast Augmentation is a solution that can increase breast size and shape, improve symmetry, and enhance self-confidence. We utilise Mentor breast implants, the leading brand under Johnson & Johnson, which has become a popular choice for millions of women worldwide.

Patient testimonial

From start to finish I was made to feel so welcome and at ease, it was like meeting with friends to discuss my surgery!

All of my worries and concerns were listened to and I was always invited back to have a face to face chat, which made me feel ever so valued and like they truly cared.

My surgeon was fantastic, he again made me feel really comfortable, and advised me on what would be best for me as an individual. I can’t thank the team enough for being so supportive and friendly! I am so happy with my results and am glad I chose Harley Medical Group.

What are the benefits of a boob job?

Breast augmentation can be done to achieve various cosmetic goals, such as:

  • Adding volume to breasts that may be too small or disproportionate to the rest of the body
  • Improving or changing breast shape
  • Restoring symmetry to uneven breasts
  • Replenishing breast fullness after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
  • Create a more feminine cleavage and restore a more youthful appearance to breasts that have lost volume or elasticity due to ageing

All of these physical changes can also positively impact your self-esteem and body image, as well as your psychosocial and sexual wellbeing.

Do you offer gender affirming augmentation?

Yes. Breast enlargement for gender affirmation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to increase the size and alters the shape of the breasts. During the breast augmentation procedure, your Surgeon will make an incision in your skin about 3 to 5cm long, usually in the crease below your breast but incisions can also be made in your underarm or around your areola (nipple).

A pocket is created for the breast implant to be placed in and this can be between the breast tissue and chest muscle or behind the chest wall muscle. The Surgeons at The Harley Medical Group use the EZFunnel™ technique to introduce the implant into the created pocket without touching it.

The surgery usually last around 1 hour.

The benefits of silicone implants

Silicone implants are the preferred choice for breast augmentation worldwide as they are the softest option, providing a more natural feel compared to other options. Moreover, in the unlikely event of a rupture, silicone implants do not leak into the body, unlike saline implants that release salt water into the body, causing the affected breast to immediately shrink. Although not dangerous, this can be visually distressing for the patient. Silicone implants have an excellent safety and quality record, and the MemoryGel™ Silicone Breast Implants used at The Harley Medical Group are approved by the FDA and surpass CE & MHRA testing standards, which are considered the gold standard in medical testing worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

At The Harley Medical Group, in order to qualify for this procedure, you must be at least 18 years old, have fully developed and be in good overall health. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will also have access to your medical history, allowing them to advise you on whether the procedure is appropriate for you. Prior to being considered for surgery, all patients undergo a thorough assessment.

Regrettably, we are unable to provide any surgical treatment to individuals who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding. Nevertheless, we encourage you to contact us six months after childbirth or breastfeeding to speak with our approachable advisors about your options moving forward.

MENTOR® breast implants, which come with a 10-year warranty (including free replacement in case of capsular contracture), are used by The Harley Medical Group. MENTOR® is a Johnson & Johnson® brand that has been producing high-quality breast implants for over 20 years. They have been approved by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and exceed CE and MHRA testing standards, with over 20 years of clinical data. They are also the UK's leading provider of implants for breast reconstruction patients. It should be noted that breast implants usually last between 10 and 12 years, but this may be longer, and they will eventually need to be replaced.

Selecting the appropriate breast implant size is a significant aspect, and this will be covered during your surgical consultations. The sizes that are suitable for you will be based on various factors, such as your existing breast size, body structure, and the quantity of excess fat or skin in the chest region. Your proficient Consultant will talk about this with you to guarantee that your breast augmentation is in line with your desired outcome.

Round shape, Teardrop shape (CPG).

At The Harley Medical Group, we offer two types of breast implants - round and teardrop. The round breast implant is the most popular type in the UK and appears like half a sphere with no defined top or bottom. Round implants provide a full look under the nipple area, resulting in a classic augmented appearance. On the other hand, the teardrop or anatomical implant is the most widely used implant worldwide. Teardrop implants have less volume towards the top and are fuller at the bottom, providing a more natural look that resembles the appearance of a natural breast. Although teardrop breast implants require a slightly longer recovery time, they have become increasingly popular due to their natural appearance. Both types of implants use the same patented Memory Gel and outer shell and come in various sizes and projections. They are also rigorously tested to the highest standards.

Sleeping on your side is not recommended for 6 weeks after surgery, as it can interfere with the position of your breast implants. During your recovery period, it's best to avoid lifting your arms too high, and sleeping on your side can encourage this movement. We suggest that you sleep on your back with proper support, such as multiple pillows or a pregnancy pillow, to elevate your upper body. This position can help to reduce swelling and make it easier for you to get out of bed.

After your breast augmentation surgery, it is recommended that you take a week off work. However, if you have a physically demanding job, you may need to take 2-3 weeks off. Our team of experts will discuss your specific circumstances with you and provide exceptional aftercare to ensure that you are ready to return to work.

The recommended time frame for replacing breast implants is typically around 10-12 years, but this can vary depending on individual factors such as age at the time of initial surgery. Your surgeon can advise you on the best course of action for replacing your implants based on your unique situation.

Recovering from breast augmentation surgery typically takes several weeks. Patients may experience some pain, swelling, and discomfort in the first few days after surgery, which can be managed with pain medication. During the first week, patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Sleeping on the back in an elevated position is recommended to reduce swelling and promote healing. It is also important to avoid sleeping on the side or stomach, as this can put pressure on the implants and delay healing. Patients will have follow-up appointments with their surgeon to monitor their progress and ensure proper healing. Full recovery can take up to six weeks, but patients can usually return to work and normal activities within one to two weeks depending on the nature of their job. It is important to follow all post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

The Harley Medical Group exclusively employs Mentor breast implants, which have been proven to be both safe and effective in numerous clinical studies. The MemoryGel Breast Implants Core Clinical Study has demonstrated that these implants continue to perform well 10 years after being implanted. Additionally, over 200,000 patients have participated in more than 10 clinical studies, providing a substantial amount of data to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Mentor implants.

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation comes with certain risks. These include, but are not limited to;

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Anesthesia complications
  • implant leakage or rupture
  • Changes or loss of sensation in the nipple or breast
  • Capsular contracture is another potential complication, in which the scar tissue around the implant hardens, causing discomfort or distortion of the breast shape.

We accept referrals from UK-based gender identity specialists, including Gender GP. All referrals are reviewed by our surgeons before a surgical consultation is booked. We will let you know if any further information is needed.
