Can the Laser treat all types of scars?

If you have a scar which you would like to reduce the appearance of you are a perfect candidate for this treatment. The treatment is suitable for treating the appearance of the following types of scars on all skin types and colours:

  • Surgical Scars
  • Post Trauma Scars
  • Skin Graft Scars
  • Dark Skin Patches (Melasma)

At this time the laser is unable to treat Dark skin types 5 and 6, due to large amounts of melanin in the skin which will absorb the light and may prevent the fractional laser effectively treating the area. If you are unsure of your colour type please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be delighted to go over this with you.

How many Laser treatments do I need to have?

A treatment course of four Laser treatments is recommended for best results. Many patients notice an improvement after only one Laser treatment but for most effective results research shows four Laser treatments are optimum.

How does the laser treatment work?

The area is treated using the Fractional Laser technology. This is done by Fractional pulses of laser light breaking down scar tissue to generate new healthy tissue. The result is smoother skin, more even in texture and lighter in colour thus reducing the appearance of the scar. The treatment is performed by one of our specialist nurse practitioners and uses a fractional laser technique. The area may first be treated with a special cream to numb the area and make the treatment more comfortable.

How long does the treatment take?

The Laser treatment takes approximately 30 minutes (the time will depend on the size of the area being treated) and we recommend four weeks between each of your treatments.

What will the area look like post laser treatment?

After the Laser treatment, the area is initially red and swollen. This will reduce over approximately 7 days and the scar reduces in appearance.

Can all skin colour be treated by the Fractional Laser?

The Laser treatment is suitable for most skin types. It is not suitable for dark skins (classified as type 4, 5 or 6 using the Fitzpatrick scale). If you are unsure of your colour type please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be delighted to go over this with you.

Is the treatment clinically proven?

The Laser treatment is the first and only fractional laser treatment clinically proven to improve the appearance of scars. It is the only treatment approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Stretch Marks. Ongoing clinical studies have shown that patients treated achieved an average improvement of between 51% and 75% in the appearance of their Scars.

Can you treat tattoo scars?

We avoid treating over tattoos as the laser could absorb the tattoo ink and reduce the pigment in it drawing any residual ink to the surface. We protect the area whilst treating the surrounding scar.
