86% rise in tummy tuck procedures
The number of tummy tucks – also known as abdominoplasty – performed has risen 86 per cent since 2000. This is according to the latest figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), which show data for the 10 years from 2000 to 2010. In 2000, 62,713 tummy tucks were performed in cosmetic surgery clinics across the USA, and in 2010 this number had increased to 116,352.The leap in numbers of people undergoing the procedure has been attributed to an increased knowledge of the results available with plastic surgery, the increasing numbers of cosmetic surgery clinics and qualified surgeons and the numbers of women combining surgical procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks and breast uplift after childbirth. Other treatments which have grown dramatically in the last 10 years include Botox, blepharoplasty and laser treatment for the removal of scars and stretch marks.
