Back-to-school time sees peak in cosmetic surgery demand from American mums

31 August 2012

Demand for aesthetic cosmetic treatments peaks just as the new school year starts, as mums feel the pressure to look their best as they drop off their young ones. That's according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), which says that the end of summer is a popular time for patients booking in for breast reduction and tummy tuck procedures. The trend is especially marked around the celebrity-studded neighbourhood of Beverley Hills, California, where, according to Dr Jay Orringer, a locally-based cosmetic surgeon, women book in ahead of the start of the new school year, as they can be confident that they can fit their recovery time into their regular routines. "Mothers are often anxious to undergo a procedure now because they have enjoyed the bulk of the summer, while anticipating looking great for the fall and rest of the year", Dr Orringer said. And he says the demand for procedures extends to female students, who often look to undergo breast reduction operations before they return to school. Overall, demand for cosmetic surgery procedures rose by five per cent across America last year, with a total of 13.8 million ops carried out, according recent statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
