Botox is a popular Non Surgical treatment for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Despite being more common among female patients, the number of men requesting Botox has risen by more than 200 per cent since 2000. According to New York City-based Todd Schlifstein, 10 percent of his Botox patients are male – “they just like to keep it quiet”.
So what exactly are the benefits of Botox? Contrary to popular belief, this Non Surgical treatment does not freeze the face. Rather, it works by paralysing your muscles, preventing them from constantly contracting and relaxing, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Although it only has a temporary effect (results last up to four months), Detroit-based Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn said: “Even when it wears off, the wrinkles that come back aren’t nearly as deep.”
Many people mistake Botox for Dermal Fillers. The former is used to erase lines and wrinkles while the latter addresses hollowed cheeks, saggy face and dark circles. New York City Cosmetic Dermatologist Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank explained: “I tell patients, ‘Fillers fill holes, and Botox flattens mountains.’”
Dr. Frank advises prospective Botox patients to seek advice and treatment from a trained specialist to avoid unnatural-looking results. “Whoever’s wielding the needle should use words like natural and subtle,” he added.
The reason for the treatment’s popularity among men? Botox requires no downtime; it can be administered quickly, and when done right, can look so natural that nobody can tell you’ve had anything done.
