Blue is the new black: spring ‘16s biggest beauty trend

6 October 2015

It’s official: blue is back! But not in the frosty eye-shadows and candy coloured nail polishes that were popular in the 90s - thank goodness. For spring 2016 blue make-up has had a chic make-over, think sultry navy, vivid cobalt and deep shades of teal.

Aquamarine eye-liner was a popular look on the runways of New York Fashion Week, popping up at Hugo Boss, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Monique Lhuillier. The look was edgier at Mary Katrantzou, where the models walked with cobalt blue lashes that made the eyes pop against fresh-faced complexions

The theme continued at Milan Fashion Week, with artful flashes of blue shadow on eyelids of models at Giamba and Missoni. Then make-up artist Lucia Pieroni, created a smouldery navy smoky eye at the City of Lights show.

Pieroni said of the look, “The runway looks a bit like a dance club, so the look we’re doing is like seventies disco meets the nineties… the key is to get the colour really intense and dark around the lashes, but then blend it so the edges become very soft… (the colour) sort of bleeds out so you get this gorgeous, glittery effect that’s also a bit grungy.”

The trick to recreating the navy blue smoky eye is to use eye pencils rather than eye shadow, these are tidier to apply and give a more intense colour. Apply the liner generously around the lash line and then use a soft eye-shadow brush to blend the colour upwards to create a soft focus finish.
