After years of market domination, figures reveal that breast surgery has overtaken liposuction as the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States. According to figures from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, nearly 344,700 of the 10.2 million cosmetic surgery procedures last year were breast augmentations. This marked the first time that boob jobs have proved more popular than body reshaping in the form of liposuction in the US. However, while breast augmentations were the most popular procedure overall, liposuction remained the most popular surgical choice for men - despite the fact that more and more men are turning to breast reduction operations to tackle the problem of man boobs. When it came to non surgical procedures Botox topped the statistics for both men and women, followed by chemical peels for women and laser hair removal for me. A recent American survey from The Aesthetic Surgery Education & Research Foundation (ASERF) also found that injectable procedures were thought of as mainstream and had been accepted as a medical aesthetic treatment option. Recent figures from market research firm Mintel found that in the UK, almost half of all adults surveyed believed that tummy tucks and liposuction were the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. However, breast surgery has become an increasingly popular option in the UK in recent years. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reports that the number of breast surgeries in the UK grew 275 per cent between 2002 and 2007 and that there was a further five per cent increase in 2008.
