Can you eat your way to youthful skin?

If you’re a fan of anti-ageing creams then you’ll be familiar with collagen, a protein found in our skin to keep it plump, smooth and youthful. Over time, our natural levels of collagen deplete, leading to the development of wrinkles and fine lines. While creams containing collagen can help to reverse the hands of time, what you eat can also have an anti-ageing effect.

Certain nutrients are needed to boost collagen production. These include:

  • Lysine. This amino acid stimulates the production of collagen and muscle protein. You can find it in foods such as cheese, fish, eggs, milk, red meat, potatoes and soy products.
  • Proline. An amino acid, Proline helps to boost the production of cartilage and collagen, maintaining healthy skin. Gelatine powder and egg whites contain plenty of proline.
  • Zinc. Oysters are the richest source of zinc but this essential mineral can also be found in eggs, chicken and other meats.
  • Vitamin C. You can find vitamin C in fruits such as kiwis, cherries, plums, and citrus fruits. This vitamin helps your skin maintain its mature collagen network, keeping you looking younger for longer.
  • Vitamin E. This vitamin works in conjunction with vitamin C to stimulate the formation of collagen. You can find vitamin E in nuts and seeds.

In addition to the above foods, collagen is naturally found in the following:

  • Broth and soup made from bone stock
  • Jelly
  • Gelatine
