Could the way you sleep be causing your wrinkles?
11 July 2014We all understand the importance of beauty sleep – a solid eight hours a night not only leaves you refreshed for the day ahead but also helps to stave off those dreaded wrinkles. The American Academy of Dermatology tells us something different: “resting your face on the pillow the same way every night for years can also cause wrinkles”. The reason for this? Sleeping in the same position every night, with one cheek pressed against your pillowcase causes the collagen and elastic tissue in your skin to break down over time, leading to the development of wrinkles. Luckily, expert Dermatologists are on hand to offer advice about our night time habits. Dr Apratim Goel advises: “There are a few steps that can be taken to minimise the effects. Following a good night skin care regime is essential as skin metabolism is highest at night. “Also drink at least one glass of water at night before sleeping as it keeps the skin hydrated.” She also suggests changing your pillowcase from cotton to silk or satin to minimise friction while you sleep. Another expert takes this idea one step further, suggesting the use of an anti-wrinkle pillow, such as a buckwheat hull pillow which lessens the pressure on your face, helping to prevent wrinkles and reduce eye puffiness. Dr Rashmi Shetty, a leading Cosmetologist and Anti-Ageing expert, agrees: “Most of us end up sleeping on our sides and this causes exaggerated lines on the face, and also between the breast on the décolletage area, making one look a lot more aged.” However, the Dr says the worst thing a person can do is sleep on their stomach, advising people to invest in a pillow which both supports the neck and keeps the spine straight. Do you always sleep on your side? Have you noticed a change in your skin from doing so? Send us a tweet with your observations.
