1 December 2015
Is your skin itchy and red with an Acne-like appearance? If so, it’s possible you’re suffering from Rosacea. While it is thought that one in 10 people are affected by the common skin condition, the National Rosacea Society found that a huge 95 per cent of sufferers know little about its symptoms.
So what exactly is Rosacea and how can it be treated?
What is Rosacea?
It is not known what exactly causes Rosacea – but sufferers of this skin condition can be identified by their red and often irritated complexion. There are certain factors which can trigger redness, such as extreme temperatures, excessive exercise, anxiety, stress, caffeine, and spicy foods. It’s also known as a relapsing condition – meaning that there will be times when sufferers experience severe symptoms, as well as periods of reduced symptoms.
What are the symptoms?
Flushed skin is one of the most common symptoms of Rosacea, however some sufferers may experience permanent redness. For others, a burning or stinging sensation, sudden breakouts or visible blood vessels can indicate Rosacea.
How can it be treated?
There is no cure for the skin condition but there are many ways it can be managed with treatments including creams and gels that can be applied to the skin to reduce signs of redness. Unwanted Acne or blemishes can be treated with lasers to smooth the skin and even out its tone. You may also find it helpful to reduce your intake of alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods.
