11 July 2012Eyelid surgery has been revealed as the fourth most popular surgical cosmetic procedure in 2011. Figures from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that more than 147,000 blepharoplasty operations were performed in the US last year, suggesting many individuals are concerned about this part of their face.Dr Eric Okamoto, a surgeon working in California who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, claimed people usually focus on their eyes when they start to notice signs of ageing. He has seen an increase in the number of patients asking for treatment on this part of their face when they come to his practice in Fremont, whether it is because their upper eyelids are dropping or because they have bags on their lower lids. Dr Okamoto admitted there has been an increase in the number of non-invasive procedures such as Botox that people can use to tackle the problem, but these will not be as effective or long-lasting as surgery. He also warned those thinking about having work done on their eyes to ensure the procedure is carried out by a board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon, as this will increase the chances of a patient achieving the look they wanted.
