Celebrities are constantly having their photograph taken, giving them the chance to flash those dazzling pearly whites – you can barely see anything of their gums. This ‘ideal’ Hollywood smile has led to an increase in the number of people undertaking Botox in a bid to decrease the amount of gum shown in their smile. Dentists are injecting small amounts of the substance into a patient’s upper lip to paralyse the muscles, which then allows the upper lip to drop slightly, hiding the excess gum shown when a patient smiles. In the past, those who wanted to reduce the appearance of gum in their smile would have had to undergo Cosmetic Surgery. Using Botox offers patients a much faster, cheaper solution. Both Dentists and Cosmetic Surgeons define the ‘ideal smile’ as one with only two millimetres of gum showing. “Anything over three to four millimetres of gum showing starts to look ‘gummy’,” said Dr Stan Heifetz, a New York based Cosmetic Dentist. This Non Surgical treatment allows patients who previously had a ‘gummy’ smile to smile more naturally, without feeling self-conscious. According to Dermacare Medical in New York, “Very often those with gummy smiles try to control and minimise their smile and some feel so self-conscious that they prefer not to smile at all. This may have a detrimental effect on one’s professional, social, and personal relationships.” Do you have a gummy smile? Would you consider undertaking Botox to correct it?
