Make Your Anti-Ageing Products Work Harder With These Simple Tricks

We invest a lot – of time and money – into our skincare, and so it’s important the products we use work effectively. If you’ve ever been left wondering whether the serums, moisturisers and gels you’re applying actually make any difference to your skin these top tips are for you! Here’s what the experts do to maximise the results of their anti-ageing products.

  • Exfoliate

“Think of the surface of the epidermis – those dead skin cells – as a barrier. You have to remove it for products to get in.” says skin care professional Amy Wechsler.  To give your skin the best chance of absorbing the active ingredients in your anti-ageing products first of all you need to remove any surface dirt and grime using a cleanser and toner.

It’s also important to exfoliate once or twice a week.  This will remove the dead skin cells Amy is referring to and clear a path for active ingredients to be soaked deeper into the skin, where they’re really needed.

  • Wash your face in warm water

This is another tip to boost absorption. Washing your skin in warm, rather than cold, water causes your pores to dilate allowing the nutrients from your anti-ageing products to get into the skin.

  • Start with your oils and serums

The most potent anti-ageing products should be applied first, so whether it’s a serum, oil, eye-gel or all three begin with the products that have the active ingredients in and then finish with a your all round moisturiser.

  • Store your creams correctly

Light and temperature can impact on the efficiency of anti-ageing ingredients so it’s important your products are stored properly. Keep them in a cool, dry place – like a medicine cabinet – and for eye gels or creams try putting them in the fridge for extra de-puffing in the morning.

  • Never skip the SPF

SPF really is your best friend when it comes to fighting signs of ageing. Wear factor 30 every day and remember you’ll need to reapply your sunscreen during the day because no product is completely sweat or water proof.

A good tip if you suffer from blemishes and acne is to use a physical sunscreen product that contains zinc or titanium oxide. These sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed, so they won’t clog your pores in the same way that other products can.
