We all crave sugar every now and again especially at that time of the month. Rather than reaching for the nearest chocolate bar to satisfy those cravings however, experts are suggesting we turn to foods naturally high in sugar, such as fruit. Why? Well because sugar has been found to be the biggest cause of ageing more so than smoking and sun exposure. Anti-ageing experts everywhere are talking about Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs). These are formed as a result of a high intake of sugar, which causes glucose molecules to attach themselves to collagen proteins. This in turn damages the collagen and leads to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. According to the experts, AGEs damage proteins, making cells stiffer, less flexible and more prone to damage and premature ageing. So the more sugar you eat, the more AGEs develop, meaning the more you crave sugary foods around the time of your period the quicker you are ageing. For those suffering from sugar cravings during their monthly menstrual cycle, there are other ways to satisfy them, such as choosing chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa or by eating magnesium-rich foods.
