Surgeon outlines why breast ops are tops
22 August 2013Recent figures show that breast augmentations have been the most popular form of cosmetic surgery carried out in America for eight years in a row. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) found that 98 per cent of women who had undergone this procedure said the results either met or exceeded their expectations, while nine out of 10 admitted the operation had led to them feeling better about themselves. Dr Emily Kirby, a cosmetic surgeon based in Fort Worth, Texas, also points to the routine nature of a breast operation, the procedure generally taking one to two hours, with a back-to-work time of just a few days in most cases. The survey also took the opportunity to reiterate the good safety record of both saline and silicone gel implants. The contents of the former, if ruptured, can be safely absorbed into the body, while silicone implants should be checked every three years by means of a routine MRI scan, Dr Kirby recommends. Finally, Dr Kirby said that modern implants allow women to choose their desired breast shape. And she concluded: "Women continue to seek breast augmentation because it boosts confidence and self-esteem through a safe, reliable cosmetic procedure that produces consistent results."
