The Growing Popularity of Cosmetic Lip Treatments

Here in the UK we’re all about the pout right now, with women everywhere keen to get that ideal bee-stung lips look.

And us Brits aren’t the only ones, as new figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have revealed cosmetic lip treatments are the second-fastest growing facial procedure in the US, behind Dermabrasion procedures.

And why is everyone after the perfect pout? Apparently, it’s so they look good in selfies and on social media.

David H. Song, MD, president of the ASPS, said: “We see images of ourselves almost constantly on social media, so we’re much more aware of how we look. The good thing about lip procedures is that you have so many options, and you can change the look of your lips as subtly as you want.”

The study revealed that the number of people getting lip implants grew by at least 10 per cent in every single US state in 2015, with both men and women choosing to have the procedures. In total, 27,449 lip implant procedures were performed – equating to one every 19 minutes throughout the year – 48 per cent up on the number of lip implants performed in 2000.

Lip implants have been around for many years now, but thanks to the technological advances in the industry they are not simply more readily available, but they are of a much higher – and safer – quality.

Interestingly, ASPS performed their own survey on the back of the statistics, asking more than 1,000 women in the US which celebrity’s lips they would most like to have. Stars with naturally full lips came out on top of the poll, with Jennifer Lawrence proving to be the winner, ahead of Scarlett Johansson.

Celebs with famously full lips like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Garner came fourth and third respectively.

Which celebrity’s lips would you most like to have? Are you a fan of J-Law’s subtle lips, or Angelina’s fuller lips? Share your thoughts with us on Twitter.
