The cast of reality television show The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) has boosted the economy by £1.4bn – more than the Duchess of Cambridge – according to retail experts. The sales of white stilettos were up 33%, lacy underwear up 73% and hairdryers up 51%, but even more impressive were the sales of Nailene false nails – up 567% after viewers saw these being used on the ITV show, and false eyelashes, up 249%.Sally, a fake tan company, reported an increase in sales of 89% since the start of the show, while Sainsbury’s said people had been flocking to their stores to buy sparkling wine – up 61%. In the cosmetic surgery industry, clinics reported a rise in the number of women asking for a stomach like Lucy Mecklenburgh’s when coming in for liposuction – nearly one in five – while Amy Childs was said to be behind a 32% rise in the number of women asking for cheek implants and dermal fillers. Omaid Hiwaizi, marketing expert at SapientNitro, said: “TOWIE is hugely aspirational.” The Duchess of Cambridge is said to have boosted the economy by £1billion, inspiring women to spend an average of £250 on the high street in an attempt to ‘get her look’.
