Why stress can be bad for your skin

5 November 2014

We all lead fast-paced lifestyles and sooner or later, it can catch up with you. While nobody enjoys being stressed, it can often be difficult to avoid it – but did you know that stress can also have a negative impact on your skin?

According to one Skin Care expert, “dry skin, breakouts and rashes or reactions are the most common ways skin shows you’re stressed.”

That’s not all though – stress can also make current skin problems worse and can even be the cause of certain skin issues, such as hives.

So how exactly are stress and skin problems linked? When you feel anxious or stressed, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode, which in turn has an effect on your immune system, making it more difficult to get rid of toxins – and it’s this which can lead to breakouts and rashes.

The next time you feel stressed, try one of these relaxation tips:

  • Write down your worries on a sheet of paper
  • Take a day out for “me-time”
  • Prioritise your to-do list and work on completing the essentials only
