What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins, also known as varicosities, are twisted, larger veins, usually found on the legs and feet. They are typically blue or dark purple in colour, and can often cause pain. Although over 25% of adults suffer from this condition, it is more common in women than men.
What causes varicose veins?
Varicose Veins are usually caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves. Inside your veins are tiny one-way valves that open to help pump the blood to your heart, and then close to prevent it flowing backwards.
Sometimes the walls of the veins become stretched and lose their elasticity, causing the valves to weaken. Blood will then flow backwards, collecting in pools and resulting in stretched and twisted veins, also known as varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure which uses a fine needle to inject sclerosant into the veins that need treatment, under the guidance of ultrasound imaging. Sclerotherapy treatments are suitable for removing small varicose veins (reticular veins) and thread veins (spider veins).
This procedure is also known to help relieve the symptoms of your condition, including pain and itching. Depending on the size and severity of your varicose veins, sclerotherapy can take up to 1 hour.
Aftercare
You may be advised to wear compression socks or stockings for 24 hours following your treatment. These can then only be worn during the day and removed at night.
Your surgeon will provide you with clear instructions as to what you need to do and avoid to make sure the results of the procedure are maximised.
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Recommended by the National Institute of Care and Excellence (NICE), Endovenous Laser Ablation has transformed the treatment of varicose veins, demonstrating safe, long-term results. This procedure is guided by an ultrasound scanner to insert a laser fibre into the leg veins that need treatment.
The veins are then destroyed using heat and naturally absorbed by the body over time. EVLA is also carried out under local anaesthetic, so the level of discomfort is minimal and most patients do not feel any pain at all.
Aftercare
Depending on the number of veins to be removed, EVLA takes 1-2 hours, meaning you can return home the same day. After the procedure, you will be given a compression stocking to wear for 1 week along with clear instructions on what to do and what to avoid.
You will also be asked to return for a follow-up appointment with your surgeon, to ensure the best results.
