Many men find that pockets of fat settle in the chest area and when this happens it can difficult to rectify. They may be due to an increase in weight but can also be hormone related. Gynaeccomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts" which is due to the abnormal increase in the glandular tissue. This is quite a common condition affecting an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men.
A chest reduction procedure will remove pockets of fat and will reshape the area. Your Cosmetic Surgeon can remove excess fat by making a small incision around the lower half of the nipple area and carrying out liposuction. This is normally a day case procedure under local anaesthetic, a small incision is made to the chest area and a solution is passed through a fine tube. The fat cells are then removed from the chest. The procedure normally takes 1- 2 hours to complete.
Stitches are usually dissolvable and so do not need to be removed. The area heals quickly with scars fading well. As with liposuction an elastic garment will need to be worn for a week or so, and you can generally expect to return to work within a few days.
