What is a Mummy Makeover?

Mummy makeover surgery is gaining popularity in the UK, having a positive impact on patients’ self-esteem. Exercise can play a part in restoring your body confidence after having a baby, but it can only achieve so much. To fully transform a postpartum body, many women turn to cosmetic surgery to enhance certain areas of concern. The effects of pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding are different for each woman, however the most impactful changes in your body following pregnancy typically happen to your breasts and abdomen. These could be stretched or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), excess skin, c-section overhang or scarring. Pregnancy and additional breastfeeding can also alter the shape of your breasts, causing breast sagging (ptosis) and loss of volume.

Feeling good about your appearance is vital to your self-confidence, but deciding to have surgery is a big step. We’re here to provide you with the information you need in order to decide what’s right for you.

What does a mummy makeover involve?

Breast Surgery: Women’s breasts often lose volume and sag after pregnancy and breastfeeding which can hugely impact confidence and self-esteem. This could be a combination of a breast uplift or reduction, and also implants if necessary.

  • Breast augmentation can add volume, restore uneven breasts, or replenish breast fullness.
  • Breast uplift, also known as mastopexy, raises and reshapes your breasts to a firmer position. Excess skin is removed, and your nipples are lifted if they have sagged after breastfeeding.
  • Implant removal for those who have had a breast enlargement in the past and may find that their implants aren’t sitting how they used, In this instance, a change of implants or removal and uplift is an option.

Tummy Tuck: Medically known as an abdominoplasty, women often consider this procedure after pregnancy has affected their abdominal muscles and skin, causing ab separation (diastasis recti) with most being left with loose skin. This procedure has 2 options:

  • A Mini Tummy Tuck targets a small area i.e., below the belly button and above the bikini line. Whilst you are standing you may look like you have a perfect figure, but when you sit down, you have a small amount of skin that may sit above your bikini line or underwear. Here; any excess skin and fat below your belly button and above your bikini line will be removed and muscles in the area will be tightened.
  • A Full Abdominoplasty addresses areas of concern both above the belly button and below towards the bikini line. While you are standing, or sitting, if you have excess and loose skin clearly visible around your abdomen you may be suitable for the procedure. Any excess, saggy skin and fat in the abdominal area will be removed and the skin and muscles tightened.

Liposuction: also known as fat removal surgery, liposuction can help remove stubborn areas of fat that may have been formed during pregnancy, and reshape particular areas of the body.

  • Traditional liposuction can often be combined with a tummy tuck procedure to remove larger deposits of fat around your abdomen, but can be performed in most areas.
  • Vaser liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to precisely target and remove areas of unwanted fat to create a higher level of definition and tone, for a more sculpted body.

Please note that immediately after surgery you will need support with childcare as you will be unable to bend or lift. You might find this tough, but to ensure proper healing, you must follow this instruction for several weeks. Your own safety and recovery should remain a top priority. This may involve your spouse taking time off of work for childcare, hiring a babysitter, or having family stay over to help.

The recovery time for mummy makeover surgery is dependent on the surgical procedures you choose. For the majority of cosmetic surgery procedures available in a mummy makeover, the initial recovery period is 6-8 weeks where you must wear a compression garment. After this, you can slowly begin exercising and getting back to normal. Getting used to your new body can take a different amount of time for each patient, so don’t worry if you’re not feeling up for a workout or social event straight after your 6 week post-op appointment.

It is important to note that we recommend completing your family prior to undergoing a surgical mummy makeover, as this could undo your results and cause complications if you have had skin removed or muscles tightened. Breast uplifts could also prevent your ability to breastfeed, however this should not be the case with breast implants.

Cosmetic surgery is a serious commitment and undertaking and is a decision that should not be taken lightly.

Mummy Makeover frequently asked questions

It is possible to undergo two different procedures at the same time, however, this will depend on your surgeon’s recommendations and the procedures you are considering.

Depending on your goals and surgeon's recommendations, the procedure can take between 3-5 hours in theatre and you may be required to stay overnight in hospital for monitoring.

While in general breast implants shouldn’t affect breast feeding, many women will naturally not be able to breastfeed anyway so please bare this in mind.

We recommend that patients are within a stone of their ideal weight, and you must have a BMI of 32 or under. This is because your body shape will change as and when your weight fluctuates, meaning your procedure results may change too.

Yes you can.

You can be consulted for a Mummy Makeover procedure 6 months after childbirth and 6 months after you finish breastfeeding. Patients are required to wait 6 months to ensure that your body is fully recovered postpartum.
