Medically Reviewed April 2023, by Leonardo Fasano - Body Sculpting Specialist

Considering Vaser Liposuction but not sure where to start? We sat down with Dr Leonardo Fasano, body sculpting specialist at The Harley Medical Group who answered some of the most asked questions surrounding the popular surgery.

Despite a healthy lifestyle and exercise, we can often find areas and pockets of fat that are hard to remove. Although this is perfectly natural and not harmful, many seek to remove these fat pockets through cosmetic surgery, in favour of a more slender and defined silhouette. Vaser Liposuction can help you achieve this, by enhancing your natural features and creating a defined and toned physique.

What inspired you to be a Liposuction surgeon?

"Growing up I had always been fascinated by cosmetic surgery and in general aesthetics and beauty. So when I grew up and embarked on my medical studies, that led me to cosmetic surgery. The reason why I love what I do is that I create a drastic change in shape in the body of my patients and that translates to a completely new attitude in their life, giving them a boost in confidence that allows them to reach not only the shape that they want but also the best version of themselves."

What’s the difference between traditional Liposuction and Vaser Liposuction?

"I consider Vaser Liposuction the natural evolution of traditional Liposuction. Vaser Liposuction melts the fat using heat and ultrasound before we gently suck the fat out, that is a major difference that really makes the procedure much more gentle on the body and less traumatic."

What are the steps of Vaser Liposuction?

"Vaser Liposuction is divided into three steps. First, we infiltrate the area we would like to treat with some numbing solution that again, not only numbs the area but also constricts the blood vessels so that there is minimal blood loss. After that step we then start melting the fat using ultrasound and heat that is done very gently with different cannulas. Then with another sucking cannula, we are able to gently and very specifically aspirate the fat that is in the areas we want to treat so that we can sculpt the area we want."

Does Vaser Liposuction hurt?

"My patients usually experience just some achiness, as if they had just ran a marathon or they had done an intensive workout, so nothing too intense. However, that’s just an average and some people feel much worse and some people feel nothing at all."

What aftercare should patients follow?

"After Vaser Liposuction it is important to have some time off work to allow your body to rest and heal properly. Usually one week is more than enough if my patients do an office based job. If they have more of a physical job then we recommend two weeks. We also make patients use compression garments, as I usually say they are as important as the procedure itself because they really teach the skin where to heal, preventing the skin from falling inappropriately."

Is Vaser Liposuction permanent?

"Providing that the patient carries out a healthy lifestyle, Vaser Liposuction provides a relatively permanent change in shape."
