What is Designer Vagina? All Your Questions Answered

Cosmetic Surgery has steadily increased in popularity over the years, with procedures that were once seen as taboo now commonly requested. Cosmetic Gynaecology (more commonly, and misleadingly, known as Designer Vagina) is the collective term for any Cosmetic Surgical procedure performed on the vagina, of which there are multiple.

The term "Designer Vagina" actually refers to procedures undertaken purely for cosmetic reasons but is often misused (due to a lack of terminology) to refer to medical procedures. Cosmetic Gynaecology is not something to be undertaken lightly. It is important that prospective patients weigh up all of the reasons for having surgery and that these are discussed in full with your Cosmetic Surgeon during consultation.

The Harley Medical Group is a responsible and ethical provider of Cosmetic Surgery, and our specialist team of Cosmetic Surgeons have been known to decline to perform surgery on patients if the reason for having their chosen Cosmetic Gynaecology procedure would not be deemed responsible.

Cosmetic Gynaecology procedures

These are the main procedures which are classed as Cosmetic Gynaecology:

ThermiVa Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatment

What is it? ThermiVa is a non-invasive, non-hormonal vaginal rejuvenation treatment using radio frequency energy to gently heat tissue with little to no discomfort. The treatments improves: vaginal looseness or laxity, vaginal dryness, incontinence and bladder control.

The procedure: The treatment lasts 30 minutes and is delivered once a month over a three month period. Anaesthetics and post treatment medication are not required. ThermiVa is a non-surgical procedure which uses a small disposable wand specifically designed to deliver radio frequency to the vagina. ThermiVa treatment is pain free. It has a warming effect as a small amount of energy is used to heat the tissue and muscles around the vagina.

Recovery time: There is no downtime after ThermiVa treatment. ThermiVa delivers instant results and you can enjoy the improvements the same day.

Results: After treatment, you will notice the muscles and tissues in your vagina are tighter, bladder control improves and there is an increase in lubrication.

Aftercare: Although no aftercare is required after ThermiVa treatment, we recommend a single top up session after one year. Whether you choose a follow up treatment or not, The Harley Medical Group will be here for you whenever you need.

Labiaplasty

What is it? Also known as Labia Reduction surgery, Labiaplasty is undertaken to alter the size of the labia minora (inner labia). Whether the size of your labia makes you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable during sexual intercourse; you experience chafing from your underwear or clothing such as jeans; your labia have been stretched during childbirth or you have lost a large amount of weight, this is an effective solution.

The procedure: This common procedure takes around an hour to complete, during which your Cosmetic Surgeon will make small incisions to reduce or correct the shape of your labia.

Recovery time: You may experience some discomfort and swelling afterwards but this should go within two weeks. We recommend that you book at least one week off work following the procedure.

Results: As the incisions made during Labiaplasty are small, they will be barely noticeable and generally heal quickly. It is important that you allow the area to heal fully before engaging in sexual intercourse. This usually takes around three to four weeks.

Aftercare: Your Cosmetic Surgeon will dress the area post-surgery and you will be invited for a post-op review around one week later to check that everything is healing well. In the meantime, please follow our aftercare guidelines to speed up the recovery process.

Pelvic Floor Repair

What is it? Performed to help repair any damage to the perineum which has been caused during a difficult childbirth, as well as to strengthen the muscles in control of urinary function, Pelvic Floor Repair is a fairly common procedure. This surgical procedure is undertaken to help women regain their confidence during sex and to abate any feeling of discomfort. It can also help to stop incontinence by strengthening your vaginal and pelvic floor muscles.

The procedure: Pelvic Floor Repair surgery involves tightening your ligaments and vaginal muscles. You will be given a general anaesthetic and will be required to stay overnight in hospital afterwards.

Recovery time: You will be given painkillers to help ease some of the pain and discomfort you may feel post-surgery. It is common to experience soreness and swelling in the area afterwards. We advise you to book up to two weeks off work and avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for around four weeks to help speed up the recovery process.

Results: Post-surgery you will notice an improved appearance of the perineum, with no more excess skin or lumpy scarring. The procedure will restore your bladder control and you should no longer feel any discomfort during intercourse, helping you to regain your confidence.

Aftercare: It's important to allow your body to fully heal after Pelvic Floor Repair surgery. After the swelling has subsided, you should abstain from sexual intercourse for up to eight weeks.

Vaginal Tightening

What is it? During the ageing process, it's common for your vaginal muscles to lose tone, which can lead to a loss of sensitivity during intercourse. Vaginal Tightening is also undertaken by women who have been left with loose and weak vaginal muscles from having children. This procedure is an effective way to restore control, strength and tone to your vaginal muscles, restoring your confidence and improving your sexual satisfaction.

The procedure: Vaginal Tightening is performed under either local or general anaesthetic (determined by your Cosmetic Surgeon) and takes about 60 minutes to complete. It involves shortening any muscles at the back of your vagina which have been stretched, removing the excess skin and joining them together to reduce the size of your vagina.

Recovery time: It's common to feel sore after the procedure but this should ease after two to three days. We advise you to book a week off work to speed up the recovery process, which usually takes up to three weeks.

Results: Following the procedure, you can expect to notice an improvement in the muscle tone of your vagina. All scars are internal so you will not need to worry about them affecting the appearance of the area.

Aftercare: We're committed to providing a full aftercare service which includes a check-up post-surgery to make sure that your body is healing well. We recommend that you avoid having sexual intercourse for between four and eight weeks after surgery – your Cosmetic Surgeon can advise you on this during your check-up.

Why do people have Vaginal Cosmetic Surgery?

There are many reasons for choosing to have one of the three main Vaginal Cosmetic Surgery procedures. Many of our patients have experienced particularly traumatic childbirths, which have left them with a lack of confidence as well as a loss of sensitivity during intercourse. For others, the impact of ageing has caused muscle tone in the vagina to weaken. Whatever your reason for wishing to have one of the above procedures, our specialist Cosmetic Surgeons will be with you at every stage of the process to make sure your needs are catered for.

Important factors to consider

Choosing to undergo Cosmetic Gynaecology is a life changing decision which should only be made once you've considered all of the options available to you. In addition to attending an initial consultation with one of our experts, it's important for you to bear the following in mind:

  • What are my reasons for having Cosmetic Gynaecology?
  • Is there someone who can collect me after the procedure?
  • How long will I have to be away from work?
  • What results and I expecting and when will I see them?
  • Will the recovery process affect my daily activities?
  • Will I need to have repeat surgery later down the line?

General aftercare guidelines

While you will be given procedure specific aftercare, there are some general guidelines which you should follow after having Cosmetic Gynaecology:

  • Avoid wearing tight clothing. We recommend that you wear loose clothing and cotton underwear post-surgery. You may also be required to wear a sanitary towel for a few days after surgery.
  • Clean after using the toilet. It's vital that the area remains clean to avoid infection post-surgery. You should rinse the area with a shower head after using the toilet.
  • Know your menstrual cycle. Cosmetic Gynaecology should not be completed at the same time as your menstrual cycle. Patients should take care to avoid booking surgery on days when they are menstruating; otherwise the Cosmetic Surgeon cannot operate.
