Dame Helen reveals her secrets to growing old gracefully
30 July 2015
When it comes to looking gorgeous at every age, Dame Helen Mirren wrote the rule book. The actress recently celebrated her 70th birthday and has a look women decades younger find enviable. So what’s the secret to Dame Helen’s evergreen beauty? According to a recent interview, for her role as a L’Oreal ambassador, the trick may be not to care too much!
Here is some of the best pro ageing advice given by the actress:
- We should accept the fact we aren’t all beautiful (at least not on the outside!)
The Dame made no secret of the fact that she hates the word ‘beautiful’. “Not all of us are beautiful” she explained, “Kate Moss is beautiful, so is David Beckham, and I can appreciate a beautiful girl walking down the street. Young is beautiful. But the majority of us are something else and I wish there was another word for it."
- Yes, you probably did look better when you were younger – but that’s OK!
They say youth is wasted on the young, and Dame Helen can completely understand the self-confidence gained with age and maturity. "I looked better [when I was younger] without a doubt. But the great thing that happens when you get older is that you don't give a flying f***. I don't look as good, but I don't care. In my job I work with great makeup artists and I get to wear Victoria Beckham dresses, but in my other life I get on the tube and bus and go to the supermarket without makeup on. As you get older you lose the incredible insecurity of being young.”
- Your hair is not a big deal
Forget spending hours in the salon and paying a small fortune for the perfect blow-dry, the actress rarely visits a professional hair dresser. “Everything that happens to my hair happens in my bathroom, I very rarely go to the hairdresser… I was never into colouring [my hair], even now I'm not. I do occasionally get fed up and sometimes want a change and I'll dye it then.”
- Use beauty products because they make you feel good, but don’t hold your breath waiting for a miracle product.
A good skin care routine can leave you looking and feeling g great, but the actress warns we should be realistic about what we expect from anti-ageing products, which can’t actually stop time no matter what they may promise! “I love cleansers and I like using body creams and face creams, but I don't honestly know if they do anything for you. I like the way they make me feel – fresh, comfortable, clean and ready for the day… I am a great consumer of all that but I am realistic about what it can do. It's more about how it makes you feel."
- Everybody is a beach body!
There are no rules about what constitutes a bikini body in Dame Helen’s book. “The term ‘gran-bod’ is disgusting, insulting, reductive and horrible. I think women should have the freedom to wear whatever they like. I love the freedom of wearing a bikini. I have a house in Southern Italy and everybody there wears a bikini no matter how big or small they are."
