Cosmetic surgery patients start their research by examining the scholarly background of each cosmetic surgeon, no matter what surgical procedure they are looking into. This is the view of Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr Ashkan Ghavami, who also advises patients to look into the surgeons level of expertise before agreeing to a procedure. This goes beyond simply making sure that the surgeon in question is board certified, which Dr Ghavami says is the absolute minimum level of research a patient should conduct in advance. He advises all patients to look carefully at before and after photographs, as well as academic links with prestigious universities and societies, and look to see if they have written any influential white papers or research documents that have been published in industry journals. This is particularly important, Dr Ghavami says, if the procedure you are interested in for example fat transfer surgery is relatively new to the market.
