Cosmetic treatments such as laser hair removal and Botox are being offered free to people in Brazil who cannot afford to pay for the procedures themselves. Since being established in 1997, The Brazilian Society of Aesthetic Medicine's clinic in Rio de Janeiro has treated about 14,000 patients free of charge. According to a report by the Associated Press news agency, it is one of 220 sites across Brazil offering free or discounted services to those who are less well-off.In many countries, surgical and non-invasive procedures like dermal fillers and chemical peels are often viewed as a luxury. However, Dr Nelson Rosas, of the Rio clinic, argues that outside of the physical benefits, cosmetic treatments can have considerable knock-on effects, such as helping to boost patients' self-esteem. He said: "What's a wrinkle? Something minor, right? Something with precious little importance. But when we treat the wrinkle, that unimportant little thing, we're actually treating something very important - the patient's self esteem."
