sb10065851bn-001Wimbledon hopeful Simona Halep breezed through the first round and then attributed her win to hard work and breast reduction. The 17-year-old Romanian player underwent breast reduction surgery two years ago which took her from a size 34DD to a 34C. She subsequently climbed 450 places, to 58th.Halep first appeared on the scene in 2008 as a junior champion at the French Open, where it was not just her tennis skills that attracted attention. But she was not as enthusiastic about her assets as her fast-growing male fan base and decided to go in for the surgery having suffered back pain and find that her movement on court was hampered. In an interview, Halep said: “My ability to react quickly was worse and my breasts made me uncomfortable. “It’s the weight that troubles me. My breasts make me uncomfortable when I play. I don’t like them in my everyday life, either. I would have gone for surgery even if I hadn’t been a sportswoman.” This year is the first time Halep has played at Wimbledon and she is hoping to make a good comeback following time off to recover fully from the surgery.
