Wimbledon hopeful sails through first round after breast reduction
22 June 2011Wimbledon hopeful Simona Halep breezed through the first round and then attributed her win to hard work and breast reduction. The 17-year-old Romanian player underwent breast reduction surgery two years ago which took her from a size 34DD to a 34C. She subsequently climbed 450 places, to 58th. Halep first appeared on the scene in 2008 as a junior champion at the French Open, where it was not just her tennis skills that attracted attention. But she was not as enthusiastic about her assets as her fast-growing male fan base and decided to go in for the surgery having suffered back pain and find that her movement on court was hampered. In an interview, Halep said: My ability to react quickly was worse and my breasts made me uncomfortable. Its the weight that troubles me. My breasts make me uncomfortable when I play. I dont like them in my everyday life, either. I would have gone for surgery even if I hadnt been a sportswoman. This year is the first time Halep has played at Wimbledon and she is hoping to make a good comeback following time off to recover fully from the surgery.
