Leeds breast reduction overview

Medically reviewed May 2023, by Mr Sankar - Chief Medical Officer for The Harley Medical Group. Next review due May 2024.

Women who have oversized breasts may experience physical discomfort such as neck and back pain, as well as rashes under their breasts. Finding properly fitting clothes, bras, and swimwear can also be challenging, and physical activities may be limited, affecting self-esteem. A breast reduction can relieve these issues, resulting in smaller, shapelier, and lighter breasts. This can lead to increased comfort in clothing, a more active lifestyle, and a significant boost in self-confidence.

Katy and the nurses at the Leeds clinic was also amazing they was always someone there to answer any questions I had the after care was next to none everyone was amazing from start to finish and I was very well looked after. I would definitely recommend ms Helena antoniadou and the Harley medical group.

Is a breast reduction right for me?

If the size and weight of your breasts are causing physical discomfort in your daily life or affecting your personal and professional life, breast reduction surgery may be the best solution for you.

The procedure for breast reduction in Leeds

Typically, a breast reduction surgery involves making an anchor-shaped incision around your areola and extending downwards underneath your breast. Your surgeon will remove any excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of your breasts, and then reshape them. Your areolas will be repositioned, and the incisions will be closed. In some cases, if your breasts are very large, your surgeon may need to detach and reposition your areolas.

Leeds breast reduction recovery & aftercare

Breast reduction surgery is a cosmetic procedure aimed at reducing the size of the breasts and improving their shape. It can relieve physical symptoms such as back and neck pain, shoulder grooving, and skin irritation, as well as improve self-esteem and body confidence.

After the procedure, patients will need to take proper care of their incision sites, which may include wearing a surgical bra or compression garment and avoiding strenuous physical activity for a few weeks. Pain, swelling, and bruising are common in the first few days after surgery and can be managed with pain medication and rest. Patients will also need to attend follow-up appointments with their surgeon to monitor their healing progress and ensure that the desired results are achieved. With proper aftercare, patients can enjoy a comfortable and confident life after breast reduction surgery.

Choosing a surgeon

Choosing a consultant for your plastic surgery procedure can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. To make an informed decision, consider checking the consultant's qualifications and experience, as well as expert and patient reviews and their reputation. Additionally, ask for more information about the consultant's experience and patient outcomes and look at before and after pictures of their previous patients. At The Harley Medical Group, we work in partnership with world-class plastic surgeons who are registered with the UK General Medical Council and have a wealth of surgical experience. Our consultants hold substantive posts within the NHS, and they go through a comprehensive application process before practicing privileges are granted. They also hold memberships with appropriate organizations and associations, such as the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and are required to adhere to our policies and procedures.

How to find our Leeds clinic

Frequently Asked Questions - breast reduction Leeds

A breast reduction is most suitable for adult patients who experience discomfort from their breasts or who feel self-conscious about their size.

There are many reasons why people choose to have breast reduction surgery including:

  • Heavy, large, and pendulous breasts which cause discomfort, distress, and breast pain
  • Backache from supporting the extra weight
  • Shoulder marks from the pressure of bra straps
  • Difficulty buying clothes due to disproportionate chest size
  • Difficulty buying underwear
  • Inability to wear strappy tops or even the choice to not wear a bra
  • Desire to look better in your clothes and swimwear
  • Inability to take part in physical sports.

You will need to have realistic expectations of what your surgery can achieve. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss this with you and together you will make a final decision.

If you plan to lose weight, you should do it before breast reduction surgery. This makes it easier for your Cosmetic Surgeon to match your new breasts to your body shape. Also, it can also help to reduce the sagging of breasts following surgery. When we perform a breast reduction your weight should be stable.

We follow best practice guidelines and operate on patients with a BMI of less than 30.

In most cases, breasts are permanently reduced in size following breast reduction surgery. However, breast tissue can grow back after pregnancy, starting birth control pills, gaining weight, or as a result of going through menopause.

No, we are unable to offer any surgery while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. However, please contact us 6 months after giving birth or after breastfeeding and talk to our friendly advisors to discuss the next steps.

It depends on the size of your breast and the type of technique used during surgery. Often, patients are not able to breastfeed adequately. You may wish to discuss this further with your Surgeon.

If you have overly large and heavy breasts, breast reduction surgery reduces their size by removing excess fat and skin. This prevents back pain, neck pain, rashes, and other discomforts.

If you are mainly concerned about your breasts sagging, then a breast lift will reshape and support the breast tissue and remove excess skin in order to give you a more youthful appearance.

Breast reduction and breast uplift

A breast reduction is commonly combined with a breast uplift procedure. This combined surgery makes your breasts smaller and lighter as well as shaping and lifting them to their optimal position.

Liposuction

For some women, liposuction can achieve smaller breasts. Liposuction can only remove the fatty tissue from your breasts and not the glandular breast tissue which can only be removed through breast reduction surgery. Therefore, it cannot offer the level of correction that breast reduction surgery can.
