Ear Reshaping for Men

The psychological impact of protruding ears has long been noted by Doctors.

The shape, size or positioning of the ears can make a huge difference to whether a person has confidence in their appearance or not, and for many years people have been choosing to have ear reshaping surgery to increase their self-confidence.

What Is An Otoplasty?

Ear reshaping surgery is also known as Otoplasty and is a surgical procedure that is carried out to reduce the size of the ears, reshape the ears, or reset protruding ears so that they sit closer to the head.

This very straightforward procedure can be carried out on both adults and children who feel their lives are being negatively affected by the appearance of their ears.

Benefits Of Having Ear Reshaping Surgery

  • Increased self-confidence and self esteem
  • Wider choice of hairstyles
  • Stop unfriendly comments
  • More choice in sports and careers

Facts About Ear Reshaping

  • Ear reshaping is well known for boosting confidence.

  • Recovery is very quick.
  • The results of an ear reshaping procedure are permanent and immediate.

The Procedure For Ear Reshaping

Ear reshaping surgery sets prominent ears back closer to the head or reduces the size of large ears.
The ear reshaping procedure involves removing skin and reshaping the cartilage from behind the ears.
The ears are then stitched into the new position with the incision marks cleverly concealed in the natural crease behind the ear.
The ear reshaping surgery normally takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Before your ear reshaping surgery

  • Your Surgeon will advise you when you are to discontinue and/or resume activities like smoking, or taking aspirin or any other medication.
  • You will be able to discuss any concerns with your cosmetic surgeon.
  • The evening before surgery, we would recommend that you wash your hair.
  • The bandage will be on for 7-10 days continuously and during this time you will not be able to wash your hair.

The Day Of Your Ear Reshaping Surgery

  • The Cosmetic Surgeon will visit you in your room and may mark the ears with a pen in preparation for your ear reshaping surgery.
  • Your Cosmetic Surgeon will also obtain your final consent, and answer any last minute questions you may have.
  • The surgeon will remove some of your skin and reshape the cartilage from behind the ears.
  • The ears are then stitched into the new position with the incision marks cleverly concealed in the natural crease behind the ear.
  • The ear reshaping surgery normally takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Going home after ear reshaping surgery

  • There may be some residual bruising after your ear reshaping surgery, but the scars will now be well hidden behind the ears.
  • You should avoid sleeping on your sides in order to reduce ear pressure.
  • Once the bandages and any sutures are removed, we recommend regular hair washes/showers to clean behind the ear - avoiding rubbing, as the ear will remain tender for a while.
  • For further 7-10 nights we recommend you wear a sports headband to protect the ears whilst in bed.
  • It is very important that you attend the follow up post surgery appointment to care for your wound and see your Cosmetic Surgeon post-operatively to make sure that you are healing well.
  • You will have your own personal Nurse Counsellor both before and after your procedure to support you and answer any questions you may have.

Recovery from ear reshaping Surgery

You will need to wear bandages around your ears for about a week, at which time your stitches will be removed.
Once removal of the bandages, you will be able to see the results immediately.

Otoplasty surgery is also known as cosmetic ear surgery. Through this procedure, the shape, position or size of the ears are corrected if there are deformities or defects that affect your confidence.

Following Otoplasty surgery, you should sleep with your head elevated with at least two pillows for one week. It is also important to not sleep on the side of your face.

Otoplasty surgery normally takes between one and two hours.

At The Harley Medical Group, otoplasty surgery costs from £5,450.

Otoplasty surgery normally causes mild to moderate pain, and during your recovery, your doctor may advise you to take painkillers such as paracetemol to ease your recovery.

Typically, the recovery time from otoplasty surgery is at least six weeks, although you could potentially expect to see results and improvements in your ear appearance within just two weeks.

At The Harley Medical Group, ear pinning surgery costs from £5,450.

Ear pinning surgery (also known as otoplasty surgery) involves correcting the position, shape and size of your ears, particularly in terms of pinning them back if you feel they stick out too much and it affects your confidence.

Ear surgery normally takes between one and two hours.

Following ear pinning surgery, you may experience some soreness and pain, especially where the incision was made behind your ear. However, taking painkillers as recommended by your doctor may help.

The results of otoplasty surgery are usually permanent, and as long you take great care during the recovery period, there is no reason why you should require further surgery in the future.

Following ear pinning surgery, it is important to avoid touching your ears to ensure they are kept in place. It is also important to wear the headband that you are provided with to keep your ears protected, avoid strong sun exposure for at least a month, and sleep with your head in an evelated position for one week at least.

Following ear lobe surgery you will normally be able to see your stitches for a week, and overall it can take between four and six weeks for the area to heal. As long as you properly care for them, your scars will also fade over time too.

It is possible to reshape ear cartilage during otoplasty surgery, and this is something that your surgeon will be able to discuss with you.

Ear lobe reconstruction is only a minor procedure, and therefore the pain that you experience following it should be minimal. If you do experience any pain or discomfort, painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Paracetemol will help to ease your recovery.

During ear lobe reconstruction surgery, you will be given local Anaethetic to minimise any pain or discomfort. The excess skin of your ear lobe will be removed and the tissue will be reconnected, and either both or a single ear lobe can be reconstructed during the same procedure.

Following ear lobe reconstruction, it is important to ensure that you don't sleep on your ears and avoid placing any pressure on the area that has been reconstructed until your stitches are removed (approximately one week after the procedure). Your surgeon will provide you with the appropriate guidelines as to what to do and what do avoid following the procedure.

It is important that your decision to have a Cosmetic Surgery procedure is considered carefully. There are many points that should be considered before deciding to have any type of Cosmetic Treatment or Surgery.

There are also some possible risks, as with all surgical operations, which your Cosmetic Surgeon will talk through and explain to you at your consultation, answering any questions you may have. This is your opportunity to discuss your intended surgery in order that the Cosmetic Surgeon can ascertain your expectations as to what can realistically be achieved.

Every Cosmetic Surgeon who performs ear reshaping procedures for The Harley Medical Group belongs to a relevant professional organisation, is fully accredited to practice in the UK as a specialist in Plastic Surgery, and has specific training and experience in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
