FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What causes lines and wrinkles?
As we age our skin increasingly tells the story of our lives – both the external and genetic tales.
|External Factors||Genetic Influences|
|UV sun rays||Slower cell regeneration|
|Unhealthy diet||Changes in hormones levels|
|Smoking||Fat layers thin|
|Alcohol consumption||Production of collagen slows|
|Lack of exercise||Blood vessels enlarge|
|Repetitive facial expressions|
Ultimately it results in the same effect, the damage we have caused our skin over the years starts to show as:
- Skin loses elasticity
- Fine lines and wrinkles become deeper
- Skin thins
- Skin loses tone
- Skin pigments (e.g. liver spots)
- Gravity takes it's toll!
What 'purified protein' do you use?
The Harley Medical Group uses the purified protein produced by Clostridium Botulinum, which induces relaxation of contracted muscles. The commercial name for this protein is Botox®
Who administers the line and wrinkle treatments?
At The Harley Medical Group your Botox® will only ever be administered by a Specialist trained Doctor or fully trained Registered Nurse Prescriber.
What can I expect when I have my treatment?
At your initial consultation, prior to your treatment, you will meet with a Specialist Nurse Counsellor who will answer your questions and assess your suitability to proceed and agree the areas you want treated. Your Nurse Counsellor may recommend dermal fillers for deeper lines and wrinkles. You will then be booked in for your treatment at a time most convenient to you.
The treatment, administered by a Specialist trained Doctor, is injected directly into the wrinkles which results in temporarily relaxing the facial muscles and preventing the formation of wrinkles, whilst existing lines are softened. Because a very fine needle is used, most patients find that there is only mild and temporary discomfort. The entire procedure usually takes no longer than 10 minutes and during this time your Doctor will discuss with you the results which you can expect to see and advise repeat treatments that will be suitable for you.
How does the line and wrinkle treatment work?
You doctor will inject the Botox® directly into the wrinkles which results in temporarily relaxing the facial muscles and preventing the formation of wrinkles, whilst existing lines are softened. With repeated treatments your muscles become re-educated limiting the damage incurred by the skin's natural collagen and reducing the development of new lines and wrinkles.
When will I notice the treatment working?
Line and wrinkles take between 5-10 days to come into full effect - the results are not immediate.
Is there any down-time?
The treatment will take around 10 minutes and there is no down-time. Immediately following your treatment you are advised to avoid exercise and hot baths to prevent sweating out the protein. We also recommend avoiding massaging or rubbing the area for 24hours after the Botox has been injected.
Is a line and wrinkle treatment right for me?
We have learnt from our patients that there are many reasons why people choose to have line and wrinkle injections, each as individual as our patients, the recurring reasons are to reduce the appearance of frown lines between the eyebrows, reduce the appearance of crows feet, reduce the appearance of forehead lines and the desire to relax the muscles long-term to smooth facial lines. other patients have told us it alleviates migraine pains, reduces excessive sweating (Hyperhydrosis) and treats muscle pains.
Who shouldn't have line & wrinkle treatments?
Studies have not been performed on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Although treatments are not thought to be dangerous, treatment is best avoided during this time.
If you have any diseases, involving nerve damage or muscle weakness, line & wrinkle treatments are not recommended. It is also important to let your Doctor know if there is a family history of such diseases - for example Myasthenia Gravis or if you have previously suffered from Bell's Palsy.
Patients who are currently being treated with amino glycoside antibiotics or spectinomycin should wait until they have completed their course of treatment, and anyone who has had an allergic reaction to human albumin should not have line & wrinkle treatments.
How can I be sure I won't get the 'frozen face' look?
It reduces muscle movement, not prevents it. The frozen look people are well acquainted with is due to overly large amount of the purified protein being used each treatment; your Doctor should administer a small amount inviting you back for a review in two weeks to assess if more is required. With The Harley Medical Group the review with you Doctor is free of charge.
How regularly should I have a line and wrinkle treatment?
To ensure the best results long-term initial treatments should be approximately 3-4 months apart, but this will eventually become 6-12 months as your muscle is re-educated.
What are the alternatives treatments?
Line & wrinkle treatments are the only treatment that directly tackles the cause of dynamic lines by weakening the muscle that causes the skin to wrinkle. Dermal fillers, which are injected just below the surface of the skin into the line or wrinkle aim to temporarily fill the line.
Line & wrinkle treatments are often used in combination with other treatments (such as dermal fillers). Your Nurse Counsellor will be able to advise you on the treatment plan which is most suitable for you, to achieve your desired results.
What is the difference between a line and wrinkle treatment and a dermal filler?
The line and wrinkle injectable, widely known as Botox, available at The Harley Medical Group relaxes the muscle under the skin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles which have developed as the collagen has been worn away.
A Dermal Filler is a temporary volumiser injected into the skin that will fill facial lines and wrinkles, enhance lips and create facial contouring e.g. to the cheeks or nose and revitalise the skin.
Dermal fillers are used on lines and wrinkles that remain present on the skin when the muscle underneath is relaxed with Botox.
Dermal Fillers are a fluid form of Hyaluronic Acid which is a protein found between the cells of all living organisms and is a component of Collagen. As we age our body produces less of this acid which contributes to the ageing process with the appearance of dry and thinner skin.
What are the long-term effects of line and wrinkle treatments?
This Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment has been used on over 1 million patients worldwide for almost 20 years and is supported by a wealth of long-term safety data.
What, if any, are the possible side effects?
Side effects of line & wrinkle treatments are rare - indeed it is one of the safest Cosmetic procedures available.
However, there is the possibility of inadequate injection technique resulting in the treatment being injected or dispersed by massaging the area, this can cause a temporary weakness and is why it's so important to have your treatment at a clinic which is registered by the Care Quality Commission (the independent inspection body for both the NHS and independent healthcare industry).
When the treatment begins to work, you may notice some temporary strange "sensations" around the treated areas as the muscles that have not been injected adjust. Some patients may experience some tenderness, mild redness, swelling or bruising follow the treatment but these are only short-term effects that last a few days.
How much do line and wrinkle treatments cost?
The price will depend on the area being number of points needed to achieve the desired results.
How long will a line and wrinkle treatment last?
You will probably not need to have another treatment for around 3-4 months. Following repeated treatments, the effects tend to last for a longer period of time. Your Doctor will discuss with you the results which you can expect to see and advise repeat treatments that will be suitable for you. If you have a good initial result, please note that, as recommended by the manufacturers of the treatment, we aim not to perform any "top-up" treatments within a 3 month period following your treatment.
If your original lines are not too deep, you should notice a significant reduction in the depth and length of your original lines treated after one year, as the skin has a chance to regenerate without constantly being creased by the underlying muscles. If your lines are very deep, the Doctor may also discuss the additional use of dermal fillers or other complementary treatments to get the best possible result.
Is It Right For Me?
Line & wrinkle treatments are ideal for anyone who has concerns about forehead creases, frown lines or crows feet. The treatment still allows expressions to show on the face which is why many patients feel they do not have to tell work colleagues, friends or partners that they are having treatments. Many people choose to have line & wrinkle treatments to look fresher, less tired, less stressed and ultimately younger. It's always a good idea to prevent wrinkles rather than having to deal with them as and when they appear and this is where the treatment is so effective.
It's also a great starter treatment if you've never had a Cosmetic Treatment before and can be wonderful to add the finishing touch to both post brow lift and face lift surgical patients. Line & wrinkle treatments are incredibly versatile and can be combined holistically with other treatments (such as dermal fillers) to encompass total rejuvenation of the face; this is why it is so important to attend a Registered Clinic so that you can be given all the information to make an informed decision about your unique treatment plan.
