Vaser Liposuction

Despite a lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise people often find pockets of fat that are hard to remove. Though perfectly natural many men seek to remove these fat pockets for aesthetic reasons. But with lots of liposuction options, choosing the right procedure for you can be a challenge. At The Harley Medical Group we always aim to ensure that our patients get the right procedure for them which is why we offer traditional Liposuction; Vaser Liposuction and Laser Liposuction.

What is Vaser Liposuction?

Vaser Liposuction is the most advanced ultrasound technology available. It targets and breaks down fat cells that are then removed from your body through a process of suction and natural excretion, revealing defined and sculpted body*.

The procedure is minimally invasive, which means that it can be used to treat otherwise difficult areas such as the chin and upper arm. It can also be performed under local anaesthetic without the need for an overnight hospital stay.

Vaser Liposuction has significantly less downtime following the procedure, as surrounding areas of tissue are not affected, allowing for a quicker recovery*. The results are evident faster than traditional forms of fat removal, with continued improvement for up to 6 months*.

The Procedure

How Vaser Liposuction is Performed

Vaser Liposuction is also known as Ultrasonic Liposuction, because the Vaser® technology generates ultrasonic energy.

Small probes transmit sound waves which break apart and emulsify the fatty tissues between the skin and muscle, while leaving blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue preserved.

The liquefied fat is then removed using a very small cannula, via discrete incisions that are between 3-4mm in size, combining suction and massage. Any residual fat is excreted naturally by the body, giving the final result a more toned contour*.

As there is minimal disturbance to the surrounding tissue the recovery time is nominal and the results smoother than some other forms of fat removal*.

Aftercare

AFTERCARE GUIDELINES

  • You will return from theatre with a compression garment in place, you must wear this continuously until your post operative appointment.
  • You will have some discomfort*. Pain relief will be prescribed and administered as required.
  • There may be some fluid leakage initially following surgery so do not be alarmed as this is normal, however anything pronounced should be brought to the attention of the clinic*.
  • You will have a wound check at day 7 and whenever necessary thereafter. Most of the sutures used are dissolvable, however any that may need removing will be done at your post operative appointment.
  • You will not be permitted to drive for 1 week following surgery; therefore arrangements must be made for you to be collected.
  • Your compression garment must remain continuously in place until your post operative appointment with The Harley Medical Group. Details of your appointment will be confirmed by your nurse.
  • You must NOT bathe or shower following surgery until instructed to by your nurse. Following instruction you must shower daily and during this time gently massage the treated area, this helps improve irregularities in the skin as well as assist in getting the optimal result from your surgery. Dry massage may also be instructed by surgeon or nurse.
  • Movements will be restricted for initial few days following surgery so do not over do it*.
  • Do not take any medications containing aspirin 1 week following surgery.
  • The area may feel lumpy and there may be altered sensation initially* – this is perfectly normal and your nurse will discuss massage and aftercare with you on your follow up appointment.
  • Do not get the wound site wet as a warm moist environment harbours bacteria and may lead to a possible wound infection.
  • The compression garment is an important part of the healing process and must be worn for 4-6 weeks following surgery as directed by your surgeon.
  • Bruising and swelling is a normal part of the healing process, although subjective to the individual in the case of liposuction it can take 6 weeks + for the tissues to fully settle*.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 6 weeks following surgery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does the procedure take?

The length of time taken to perform Vaser Liposuction will depend on the number and size of areas being treated; however, it generally takes between one and two hours to treat up to three areas.

Can men have Vaser Liposuction?

At The Harley Medical Group a significant number of our Liposuction patients are men. The most popular treatment areas are the chest, stomach and ‘love handles’.

Can I use Vaser Liposuction to lose weight?

No form of liposuction, whether it’s traditional Liposuction, Vaser Liposuction or Laser Liposuction, should not be used as a weight loss tool.

Liposuction should be undertaken when you are at your optimum weight with the aim of removing stubborn areas of fat that exercise and healthy diet cannot address.

Will it tighten the excess skin on my stomach?

Many men find that they have excess skin on their stomach due to dramatic weight-loss. While Vaser Liposuction will tighten skin it is not able to treat large areas. To remove significant excess skin we recommend a Tummy Tuck, also known as an Abdominoplasty.

Will I be given the choice between local anaesthetic and a general anaesthetic?

Vaser Liposuction can be performed with either a general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation. This decision will be made with your Surgeon and will depend on your preference and your suitability.

When will I see the results?

Some patients will see results immediately, most see a significant improvement 6-8 weeks after the procedure. However it can take up to 6 months to achieve the final result*.

How much “downtime” will I need to recover?

As Vaser Liposuction is less intrusive than traditional Liposuction the time required for rest and recuperate is shorter*. There will be some bruising and swelling so we recommend allowing at least 5-7 days before you return to work, and 14 days before you return to the gym or undertake strenuous activity.

Most importantly, for optimum results and minimal discomfort we advise you to listen to your body and not push yourself until you are fully recovered. You will be required to wear a discreet support garment for approximately 4 weeks after the procedure.

Is Vaser Liposuction a Surgical or Non Surgical Procedure?

Our highly experienced Surgeons will treat up to four areas in one operation, depending on your suitability and requirements. You Surgeon will discuss the best treatment for you to receive optimum results in your consultation.

Will I get fat pockets in different areas after Vaser Liposuction?

If you maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle you will not experience fat pockets in the area treated or other parts of the body*. Any weight gain, or loss, you do experience will tend to be proportionately distributed over your entire body*.

It is worth noting that not all fat cells will be removed from the treatment area for the sake of your health, therefore significant weight gain will affect the treated area*.

What is the difference between Vaser Liposuction and traditional Liposuction?

While both techniques produce significant results, Vaser Liposuction is less invasive, which means it has less bruising and a shorter recovery time than other fat removal surgeries*. The smaller incisions made during the procedure also means the scarring from Vaser Liposuction is less than with traditional Liposuction*.

Unlike traditional fat reduction procedures Vaser Liposuction can be used to treat smaller and more delicate areas such as the inner thighs and chin.

Vaser Liposuction uses sound waves to break down the fat prior to removal, as opposed to traditional Liposuction where fat is manually broken down by the Surgeon.

Unlike Liposuction the procedure also tightens skin*, which means it can be performed on a wider age-range.

What does VASER stand for?

VASER means Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, referring to the energy used to liquefy the fat cells of the treated area.

Who performs Vaser Liposuction?

Vaser Liposuction, though minimally invasive, is a surgical procedure which is performed by our highly qualified and experienced Surgeons in one of our world class hospitals

Are the results permanent?

Vaser Liposuction removes superficial fat and fat cells from the treated area, as the production of new fat cells decreases significantly following puberty the results following surgery are more or less permanent*. Mild weight fluctuations will therefore go unnoticed in the treatment area as the extra fat is distributed evenly around the body*. Significant weight gain however will become noticeable in the treated area*.
