Vaser Liposuction

What is Vaser Liposuction?

Medically reviewed by The Harley Medical Group Clinical Governance Board, Chaired by Simon Smith (Medical Director & Consultant Surgeon) on 5th March 2020.

Despite a healthy lifestyle, with hours spent exercising and a diet including lots of protein, many men often find areas of their body that are hard to tone or create definition. Many also find areas and pockets of fat that are hard to remove; which, though natural, can be aesthetical unpleasing leaving many men seeking to remove these for a more defined shape.

High Definition Vaser Liposuction, also known as Liposculpture, is an advanced fat removal and reduction technique that contours and sculpts your body. Vaser lipo enhances your natural features and creates a defined and toned physique.*

Vaser Liposuction uses minimally invasive state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to precisely target and remove areas of unwanted fat. However, it is the degree of meticulous body sculpting performed by our vaser liposuction surgeon that distinguishes vaser lipo from traditional liposuction surgery. Liposculpture surgery can create more defined stomach, arm muscles and legs, as well as removing fat and tightening skin in small, intricate areas such as under the chin.

At The Harley Medical Group we always aim to ensure that our patients get the right procedure for them, and we understand that vaser lipo isn't a "once technique suits all" procedure. This is why we offer traditional Liposuction; Vaser Liposuction and Non-surgical Liposuction.

    How is Vaser Liposuction Performed?

    How is Vaser Liposuction Performed?

Vaser liposuction, also known as 'Ultrasonic Liposuction' because the Vaser® technology generates ultrasonic energy, is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive fat removal procedure. The ultrasound energy targets unwanted fat whilst preserving important tissues such as nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue and collagen to promote rapid healing. By removing both the superficial and deep fats that surround muscle groups thereby enhancing the visibility of underlying toning and musculature. The result is a reshaped body that is more define and sculpted giving you a svelte, toned and shapely appearance.

For the best results it is essential that your surgeon is a specially trained in VASER Hi Def Liposculpture, or you may receive a more refined version of traditional liposuction with no sculpting.

    Before Vaser Liposuction Surgery

From your first consultation you will meet with your vaser liposuction surgeon to discuss your expectations and potential results. At your consultation you will be weighed - you must have a BMI below 28 - and measured for your bespoke garment, required for your aftercare programme.

On the day of your procedure your surgeon will draw very detailed and precise markings on your treatment area(s), these will be unique to your physique and will replicate your underlying anatomy. The markings will then define where the surgical sculpting is going to occur. You will then made comfortable and ready for your surgery.

    During Vaser Liposuction Surgery

Vaser lipo can be performed with a local anaesthetic with light sedation or under general anaesthetic. The method of sedation chosen will usually depend of the extent of your procedure and the number of areas to be contoured, your surgeon will discuss this during your consultation.

    Liposculpture surgery has several steps:

    • Saline solution

To begin the treatment area(s) is filled with a tumescent anaesthetic solution. This helps to shrinks the blood vessels, consequently minimising blood loss and reducing post surgery bruising. It also makes it easier to break up the fatty tissue with the vaser ultrasound energy.

    • Ultrasonic energy

Small probes are then used to transmit an ultrasonic energy wave that breaks apart and emulsifies on contact the fatty tissues between the skin and muscle. This unique process ensures other important tissues largely remain intact resulting in faster recovery times. This process is highly targeted and allows your surgeon to remove the fat and etch your contours to simulate a naturally toned and defined physique.

    • Extraction

The liquefied fat is then removed using a very small hollow metal cannula (via discrete incisions that are between 3-4mm in size so scarring is minimal) which is then inserted and directed through the area of emulsified fat. The cannula then gently removes the fat through a suction process; this is often combined with a massage technique. Then your specialist trained vaser surgeon chisels out your muscle structures for a toned and defined physique.

Any residual fat is excreted naturally by your body after surgery, giving the final result a more toned contour during your recovery process.*

    After Vaser Liposuction Surgery

As there is minimal disturbance to the surrounding tissue your recovery time is swift. Please see our comprehensive vaser liposuction aftercare page for more information.

For optimum results and a faster recovery time we recommend a course of Manual Lymph Drainage massage.

    Vaser Liposuction Aftercare Guidelines

While the recovery process is different for everyone, vaser liposuction does involve more extensive aftercare that traditional liposuction. The more commitment you put in during your recovery process the better your results will be; your final outcome will not be clear until two or three months after your procedure.

The optimum aftercare programme includes a very dedicated use of bespoke body compression garments, as well as post-procedure ultrasound, lymphatic massage and correct exercise and nutrition.

Your treated areas should look great and retain their sculptured appearance for as long as you remain the same weight. If you gain weight, you will generally gain it in areas other than those that were treated.

    Post-Operative Recovery

    Incision area

    • Your incisions may experience some fluid leakage following your procedure, this is tumescent fluid and is a product of the local anaesthetic.
    • Flui leakage may be blood tinged which is perfectly normal; however anything pronounced should be brought to the attention of the clinic.
    • Within 7 days of your surgery,  you will have a wound check to assess your sutures.
    • Your sutures will gradually dissolve.
    • Avoid getting the incision area wet - bacteria rapdily grows in warm moist conditions and can lead to a wound infection.

    • You will be given a bespoke vaser liposuction compression garment for post-surgery support.
    • You will be wearing your garment when you return from surgery, this must be worn continuously until advised by your surgeon that it may be remove.
    • Iif you stop wearing your bespoke liposuction garment before you are advised you will not experience optimum results.

    Bruising / Swelling

    • You should expect some bruising, swelling and pain after your procedure.
    • You may experience some swelling for several months your procedure
    • Short-term loss of senstation in treated areas is common; as nerves regenerate sensation should return to normal.

    • You should expect some mild, and easily controlled with your prescription medication, discomfort.
    • Any discomfort will only last a very short period with most patients up and walking around comfortably after a day or two;
    • You may require some assistance in the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery as mobility will be restricted.
    •  Pain medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort; if experience severe pain contact us immediately.
    • Do not take any medications containing aspirin one week following surgery.

    Short-Term Aftercare

    • Most insurers will void car insurance for 24-48 hours after receiving a general anaesthetic.
    • You should avoid driving for approximately seven to ten days post surgery as your movements may be restricted while the brusing and swelling goes down.

    Physical Activities

    • Vaser liposuction surgery requires minimal downtime,
    • You can return to a gentle daily routine within a couple of days of your procedure - depending on the area treated.
    • Take at least a week off work to enable you to recover fully.
    • Two or three weeks post surgery the treated areas will sensitive, strenuous physical activities should be limited;
    • During the first month following surgery you can gradually return to activites such as light lifting and sex.
    • Your surgeon will give you clear advise of the activities you can undertake, based on your treatment area, during your consultation.

    • Your bespoke liposculpture compression garment, this is an important part of the healing process.
    • Your garment must be worn for between four-six weeks, as advised by your doctor.
    • The compression garment aids healing, reduces swelling and, most importantly helps ensure a good contour to your treated areas.

    Long-Term aftercare

For optimum results we advise investing in a course of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) Massage. The MLD massage technique can be used after vaser liposuction as little as 48 hours after your procedure, to help speed up your recovery. It combines an ultrasound treatment which is followed by a manual massage. By manipulating the lymph at the dermal-epidermal junction (1-2mm deep, the thickness of 4-5 sheets of paper) the technique aids the body process and eliminate excess fluid from the deeper layers as well as from shallow depths and negative spaces. MLD ensures better skin retraction, reduces stiffness in muscles, thereby improving your immediate post-surgery mobility, and has a therapeutic, anti-inflammatory effect on tissues.

    Physical Activities

    • After 6 weeks you should be fully recovered and able to undertake more strenuous and physical exercise.
    • If you are still feeling discomfort, or are not confident about returning to a more physical routine please discuss this with your liposculpture surgeon.

    Real Life Story

Vaser Liposuction - Real Life Story

Our patient Hayley recorded her journey before and after her liposcultpure surgery.

Hayley had been considering liposuction to her chin and the back of her thighs to address little concerns that excercise and healthy living couldn't for a while. After a lot of research and deliberation, and having met her vaser liposuction surgeon, she decided to go undergo vaser liposuction to tweak the areas that bothered .

How long does the procedure take?

The length of time taken to perform Vaser Liposuction will depend on the number and size of areas being treated; however, it generally takes between one and two hours to treat up to three areas.

    Can men have Vaser Liposuction?

At The Harley Medical Group a significant number of our Liposuction patients are men. The most popular treatment areas are the chest, stomach and ‘love handles’.

Can I use Vaser Liposuction to lose weight?

No form of liposuction, whether it’s traditional Liposuction, Vaser Liposuction or Laser Liposuction, should not be used as a weight loss tool.

Liposuction should be undertaken when you are at your optimum weight with the aim of removing stubborn areas of fat that exercise and healthy diet cannot address.

*Vaser Liposuction results and benefits vary and are different for every individual. Specific results cannot be guaranteed.

Will it tighten the excess skin on my stomach?

Many men find that they have excess skin on their stomach due to dramatic weight-loss. While Vaser Liposuction will tighten skin it is not able to treat large areas. To remove significant excess skin we recommend a Tummy Tuck, also known as an Abdominoplasty.

Will I be given the choice between local anaesthetic and a general anaesthetic?

Vaser Liposuction can be performed with either a general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation. This decision will be made with your Surgeon and will depend on your preference and your suitability.

When will I see the results?

Some patients will see results immediately, most see a significant improvement 6-8 weeks after the procedure. However it can take up to 6 months to achieve the final result*.

    * Vaser liposuction results and benefits vary and are different for every individual. Specific results cannot be guaranteed.

    What results can I expect?

At The Harley Medical Group our Vaser Liposuction procedure provides a subtle, defined and natural-looking result*.

    * Vaser liposuction results and benefits vary and are different for every individual. Specific results cannot be guaranteed.

How much “downtime” will I need to recover?

As Vaser Liposuction is less intrusive than traditional Liposuction the time required for rest and recuperate is shorter*. There will be some bruising and swelling so we recommend allowing at least 5-7 days before you return to work, and 14 days before you return to the gym or undertake strenuous activity.

Most importantly, for optimum results and minimal discomfort we advise you to listen to your body and not push yourself until you are fully recovered. You will be required to wear a discreet support garment for approximately 4 weeks after the procedure.

*Vaser Liposuction results and benefits vary and are different for every individual. Specific results cannot be guaranteed.

Is Vaser Liposuction a Surgical or Non Surgical Procedure?

Vaser Liposuction requires an incision to be made and is therefore a Surgical Procedure undertaken in a hospital operating theatre by our highly qualified and experienced surgeons. At The Harley Medical Group we also offer a Non Surgical Laser Liposuction Treatment called iLipoXcell.

Will I need to stay overnight in hospital?

Vaser Liposuction can be performed as a day case, however in some circumstances depending on the number of areas treated and your suitability, the Surgeon may require you to stay overnight. This will be discussed with you during your consultation with the Surgeon.

How many areas of my body can I have treated during one procedure?

Our highly experienced Surgeons will treat up to four areas in one operation, depending on your suitability and requirements. You Surgeon will discuss the best treatment for you to receive optimum results in your consultation.

Will I get fat pockets in different areas after Vaser Liposuction?

If you maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle you will not experience fat pockets in the area treated or other parts of the body*. Any weight gain, or loss, you do experience will tend to be proportionately distributed over your entire body*.

It is worth noting that not all fat cells will be removed from the treatment area for the sake of your health, therefore significant weight gain will affect the treated area*.

*Vaser Liposuction results and benefits vary and are different for every individual. Specific results cannot be guaranteed.

What is the difference between Vaser Liposuction and traditional Liposuction?

While both techniques produce significant results, Vaser Liposuction is less invasive, which means it has less bruising and a shorter recovery time than other fat removal surgeries*. The smaller incisions made during the procedure also means the scarring from Vaser Liposuction is less than with traditional Liposuction*.

Unlike traditional fat reduction procedures Vaser Liposuction can be used to treat smaller and more delicate areas such as the inner thighs and chin.

Vaser Liposuction uses sound waves to break down the fat prior to removal, as opposed to traditional Liposuction where fat is manually broken down by the Surgeon.

Unlike Liposuction the procedure also tightens skin*, which means it can be performed on a wider age-range.

*Vaser liposuction results and benefits vary and are different for every individual. Specific results cannot be guaranteed.

    What does VASER stand for?

VASER means Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, referring to the energy used to liquefy the fat cells of the treated area.

    Who performs Vaser Liposuction?

Vaser Liposuction, though minimally invasive, is a surgical procedure which is performed by our highly qualified and experienced Surgeons in one of our world class hospitals

    Are the results permanent?

Vaser Liposuction removes superficial fat and fat cells from the treated area, as the production of new fat cells decreases significantly following puberty the results following surgery are more or less permanent*. Mild weight fluctuations will therefore go unnoticed in the treatment area as the extra fat is distributed evenly around the body*. Significant weight gain however will become noticeable in the treated area*.
