Face Lift Surgery

The visible signs of ageing such as lines and wrinkles, loose skin and brown spots, no longer have to be an inevitable part of getting old, and many people choose to reverse these signs with the help of Face Lift surgery and other surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Face Lift surgery, also known as Rhytidectomy, is one of the most commonly requested procedures by both men and women who want to look as young as they feel. It is performed to remove or reduce the skin that has lost its natural elasticity - usually around the eyes, mouth and jaw line - smooth the skin, reduce lines and wrinkles and rejuvenate a tired-looking appearance.

Benefits Of Having Face Lift Surgery

  • Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Looking younger
  • Feeling rejuvenated and fresher
  • Ability to wear clothes with lower necklines - no longer the need to hide behind a scarf / high-necked top
  • Easier application of make-up

The Procedure For Face Lift Surgery

There are three main types of Face Lift surgery; Traditional, Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension (MACS) and Keyhole Surgery. Your surgeon will advise you on which method is most suitable and which will produce the best results - details of each procedure can be found below. For many people, combining a Face Lift with Neck Lift surgery ensures that the overall appearance is rejuvenated and patients who undergo this combination of procedures have reported looking 10 years younger.

Traditional Face Lift

Traditional Face Lift will involve your surgeon making a surgical incision along your hairline, down past the front of your ears and into the hairline behind the ears. Because of the careful positioning of the incision, your scarring will be hidden within the hair and natural creases of the face and it will fade quickly until it is barely visible. Once the incision has been made the surgeon will very carefully separate the skin from the underlying tissue, before repositioning excess fat and tightening facial muscles. The skin will then be lifted and stitched into place along the original incision and any excess skin removed.

Once the surgery is complete, your face will be wrapped in bandages to prevent infection and to support your face while the skin heals, but these will usually be removed the day before you are allowed to go home from hospital. Drains will also be stitched into place behind the ears to allow excess blood and fluids to drain from the area - these are sometimes left in for the first few days but this is decided on a case-by-case basis.

Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension (MACS)

The main difference between this type of Face Lift surgery and the traditional method is that the incisions made are smaller and the tightening of facial muscles and removal of excess fat is done through these small surgical incisions. Excess fat can also be removed using this Face Lift procedure.

Keyhole Surgery

If Keyhole Surgery is the right option for you, your surgeon will make several very small incisions into the skin on your face. Then he or she will feed a telescopic camera, called an endoscope, beneath the skin and the live image will be displayed on a monitor - it is from this that the surgeon can see exactly which muscles to tighten and how much excess fat to remove, if any. Keyhole Surgery is most commonly used for Brow Lifts and Upper Face Lifts and offers a short recovery time and will result in less scarring, but it is not suitable for everyone - please book a consultation with your surgeon to discuss the best option for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Face Lift surgery is also known as Rhytidectomy. It involves removing or reducing facial skin that has lost its natural elasticity for a more youthful appearance.

Prices for a Face Lift start from £8,000.

The result of a Face Lift will typically last 5 to 10 years.

Face Lift surgery can make you look younger. Having the muscle structure tightened along with skin tightening by removal, your skin is smoothed, lines and wrinkles are reduced and a tired-looking appearance is rejuvenated.

At The Harley Medical Group, we offer two types of Face Lift. Traditional Face Lift involves a surgical incision being made along your hairline, the skin carefully being separated from the underlying tissue, before excess fat is re-positioned, facial muscles are tightened, and the skin is lifted and stitched into place. With a Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension (MACS) Face Lift, smaller incisions are made.

During a Face Lift your surgeon will make an incision along your hairline, before carefully separating the skin from the underlying tissue, repositioning excess fat, tightening facial muscles and lifting and stitching the skin into place.

Why choose to have Face Lift surgery?

There are many reasons why people choose to have Face Lift surgery:

  • Looseness to the skin and relaxation of muscles resulting in wrinkles and folds on the face
  • Visible jowls - no longer having a smooth firm jaw line
  • Deep lines in the corner of the mouth, which can often give a "sad" look
  • Loose skin and wrinkling to neck area
  • A lack of self confidence - some people age prematurely and feel that the face does not match their body
  • Substantial weight loss in later life can give the effect of ageing - older skin has less elasticity than younger skin and without the fat, will become saggy and wrinkly
  • To look more youthful and attractive

Who should have a Face Lift?

The final decision will be made between you and your Cosmetic Surgeon. The procedure is most suitable for those patients with excess skin around the eye, mouth and jaw line.

No, we are unable to offer any surgery while you are pregnant or breast feeding. However, please contact us 6 months after giving birth or after breast feeding and talk to our friendly advisors to discuss next steps.

The Cosmetic Surgeon may suggest that you lose any weight before surgery to give you the best possible long lasting result. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will also suggest that you stop smoking - an important part in assisting wound healing. If you colour your hair, it is advisable to do so before surgery as it will be several weeks afterwards before it is again safe to do so. It is advisable to take a pair of sunglasses and scarf with you to hospital - this will help to hide any bruising.

If you are a smoker, or take aspirin or any other medication, your Cosmetic Surgeon will wish to discuss this with you at your consultation. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will advise you when you are to discontinue and/or resume these activities.

The Day Of Your Face Lift Surgery

The Cosmetic Surgeon will visit you in your room to obtain your final consent and mark the face with a pen in preparation for your surgery. If you have any final questions it is important that you ask your Cosmetic Surgeon at this time.

A Face Lift & Neck Lift involves the skillful and careful removal of excess facial skin from the neck, chin and cheek areas, under general Anaesthesia. When you wake up from your surgery you will have dressings on the face and possibly drainage tubes in place.

Painkillers will be offered if required, however it is not regarded as a painful procedure, more uncomfortable due to the 'tight' feeling. You can expect to be in hospital for 1 or 2 days, any drainage tubes will be removed before you go home.

Going Home After Your Face Lift Surgery

It is advisable to rest with your head propped up in the early days and avoid bending, lifting or sudden movements of the head. You will be advised on when you can wash your hair and this will help to make the removal of the stitches easier. A scarf will easily hide any bruising and swelling. Although make up can be used, it must be well away from the stitches.

It is very important that you attend the appointments, which have been made for you to care for your wound and see your Cosmetic Surgeon. It will be possible to return to work once the stitches have been removed and the bruising and swelling have settled, approximately 2 - 3 weeks.

You will have your own personal Nurse Counsellor both before and after your procedure to support you and answer any questions you may have.

Recovery From Face Lift Surgery

Recovery from each of the different types of Face Lift surgery will differ but on average our patients find that they can return to their normal daily routine after 14 days, having had their stitches removed between seven to 14 days after the procedure. It is completely normal to experience some bruising and swelling of the face and neck, but rest assured that both of these symptoms will subside very quickly, just as long as aftercare advice from your surgeon is followed.

Following a Face Lift you will need to take time off work. Bruising is usually visible for at least 2 weeks, and it could take between 2 and 4 weeks to fully recover, although the full effect may not be seen for 6 to 9 months.

It is recommended that you wait until you are at least 40 before getting a Face Lift, in order to ensure the best results.

It is important that your decision to have a Cosmetic Surgery procedure is considered carefully. There are many points that should be considered before deciding to have any type of Cosmetic Treatment or Surgery.

There are also some possible risks, as with all surgical operations, which your Cosmetic Surgeon will talk through and explain to you at your consultation, answering any questions you may have. This is your opportunity to discuss your intended surgery in order that the Cosmetic Surgeon can ascertain your expectations as to what can realistically be achieved.

Every Cosmetic Surgeon who performs Face Lift procedures for The Harley Medical Group belongs to a relevant professional organisation, is fully accredited to practice in the UK as a specialist in Plastic Surgery, and has specific training and experience in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
