Face Lift Surgery

The visible signs of ageing such as lines and wrinkles, loose skin and brown spots, no longer have to be an inevitable part of getting old, and many people choose to reverse these signs with the help of Face Lift surgery and other surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Face Lift surgery, also known as Rhytidectomy, is one of the most commonly requested procedures by both men and women who want to look as young as they feel. It is performed to remove or reduce the skin that has lost its natural elasticity - usually around the eyes, mouth and jaw line - smooth the skin, reduce lines and wrinkles and rejuvenate a tired-looking appearance.

Benefits Of Having Face Lift Surgery

  • Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Looking younger
  • Feeling rejuvenated and fresher
  • Ability to wear clothes with lower necklines - no longer the need to hide behind a scarf / high-necked top
  • Easier application of make-up

The Procedure For Face Lift Surgery

There are three main types of Face Lift surgery; Traditional, Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension (MACS) and Keyhole Surgery. Your surgeon will advise you on which method is most suitable and which will produce the best results - details of each procedure can be found below. For many people, combining a Face Lift with Neck Lift surgery ensures that the overall appearance is rejuvenated and patients who undergo this combination of procedures have reported looking 10 years younger.

Traditional Face Lift

Traditional Face Lift will involve your surgeon making a surgical incision along your hairline, down past the front of your ears and into the hairline behind the ears. Because of the careful positioning of the incision, your scarring will be hidden within the hair and natural creases of the face and it will fade quickly until it is barely visible. Once the incision has been made the surgeon will very carefully separate the skin from the underlying tissue, before repositioning excess fat and tightening facial muscles. The skin will then be lifted and stitched into place along the original incision and any excess skin removed.

Once the surgery is complete, your face will be wrapped in bandages to prevent infection and to support your face while the skin heals, but these will usually be removed the day before you are allowed to go home from hospital. Drains will also be stitched into place behind the ears to allow excess blood and fluids to drain from the area - these are sometimes left in for the first few days but this is decided on a case-by-case basis.

Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension (MACS)

The main difference between this type of Face Lift surgery and the traditional method is that the incisions made are smaller and the tightening of facial muscles and removal of excess fat is done through these small surgical incisions. Excess fat can also be removed using this Face Lift procedure.

Keyhole Surgery

If Keyhole Surgery is the right option for you, your surgeon will make several very small incisions into the skin on your face. Then he or she will feed a telescopic camera, called an endoscope, beneath the skin and the live image will be displayed on a monitor - it is from this that the surgeon can see exactly which muscles to tighten and how much excess fat to remove, if any. Keyhole Surgery is most commonly used for Brow Lifts and Upper Face Lifts and offers a short recovery time and will result in less scarring, but it is not suitable for everyone - please book a consultation with your surgeon to discuss the best option for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

The result of a Face Lift will typically last 5 to 10 years.

During a Face Lift your surgeon will make an incision along your hairline, before carefully separating the skin from the underlying tissue, repositioning excess fat, tightening facial muscles and lifting and stitching the skin into place.

Why choose to have Face Lift surgery?

There are many reasons why people choose to have Face Lift surgery:

  • Looseness to the skin and relaxation of muscles resulting in wrinkles and folds on the face
  • Visible jowls - no longer having a smooth firm jaw line
  • Deep lines in the corner of the mouth, which can often give a "sad" look
  • Loose skin and wrinkling to neck area
  • A lack of self confidence - some people age prematurely and feel that the face does not match their body
  • Substantial weight loss in later life can give the effect of ageing - older skin has less elasticity than younger skin and without the fat, will become saggy and wrinkly
  • To look more youthful and attractive

Who should have a Face Lift?

The final decision will be made between you and your Cosmetic Surgeon. The procedure is most suitable for those patients with excess skin around the eye, mouth and jaw line.

Following a Face Lift you will need to take time off work. Bruising is usually visible for at least 2 weeks, and it could take between 2 and 4 weeks to fully recover, although the full effect may not be seen for 6 to 9 months.

It is recommended that you wait until you are at least 40 before getting a Face Lift, in order to ensure the best results.

It is important that your decision to have a Cosmetic Surgery procedure is considered carefully. There are many points that should be considered before deciding to have any type of Cosmetic Treatment or Surgery.

There are also some possible risks, as with all surgical operations, which your Cosmetic Surgeon will talk through and explain to you at your consultation, answering any questions you may have. This is your opportunity to discuss your intended surgery in order that the Cosmetic Surgeon can ascertain your expectations as to what can realistically be achieved.

Every Cosmetic Surgeon who performs Face Lift procedures for The Harley Medical Group belongs to a relevant professional organisation, is fully accredited to practice in the UK as a specialist in Plastic Surgery, and has specific training and experience in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
